DizzyGuy
All quicklights have that smell, or atleast A smell while it's lighting. It's the gunpowder in it that actually gets the coal hot...

mellamobunny
if you don't want to dirty up your stove, just buy a single burner hot plate for 20$.
jtemes
spend a lil more money and get golden japanese quicklights. i love em. i use a zippo and it takes me maybe a minute to really get it going. and they have zero flavor.
Joseph
Japanese coals are in between QL and naturals, you need a stove but they get going real fast. I think nour coals are the best naturals and they are the coals I use, they break easy, smoke cleanly, and are cheaper than the competition. They still smell some when you first start them so turn on the fan over your stove while they are lighting and you won't smell them at all. MR Bubble
Right now, I'm using Golden (Canary brand) Japanese coals over a bowl of Nakhla Esk Apple. These are great coals. I personaly can't smoke the Nours or any other finger coals (I have a reaction to the olive pits they're made from), but the Japanese are great!
