Harshness=Dried up?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I've been smoking my hookah at home for a good month or two now, and for the last three weeks I've gotten my technique down to where I can enjoy a pretty decent smoke.

I store all of my molasses in a tupperware in the fridge, and have had no problems with freshness. Last night I had shisha and it was fine, but forgot to put the tupperware back in the fridge. Tonight's session ended early, the smoke was harsh and unpleasant right from the get go, almost like a regular pipe tobacco (which is fine in a traditional pipe where you're taking little puffs and not trying to inhale it)

The container was sealed, and just left out overnight, and the molasses was Nakhla strawberry, on the dry end to begin with. Is the tobacco shot, or was this just an abberation? I'll try again tommorow, maybe with melon. First time I've ever had a bad bowl of Nakhla strawberry.

I'm no expert on the subject (Sonerth/Tangiers is) but it sounds like an extreme case of humidity shock. Your tobacco went from a VERY dry environment to a more humid one. Shisha and hookahs don't like changes...changes in temp, humidity, coal types...hell, I bet if you changed your drapes it would react.

^^^ People use honey, or glycerine to restore dried up tobacco. I've never personally done it, but it has worked for people in the past. Glycerin can be found at the pharmacy apparently. Give that a shot if your tobacco is really dry.

lwieise is pretty much on the money. Going from one drastic environment like the fridge to another, will sometimes make your tobacco go wacky... Give it time to re-coup and it should be fine, unless it is completely dried out to all hell.

To begin with, you really should store your tobacco in an airtight container, out of sunlight, in a room temp setting. Putting your baccy in the fridge can many times have adverse effects. I know you said you do it normally and its worked great for you. So keep doing it if you want. But most brands tobacco shelf life is 2-4+ years with the conditions I mentioned. So storing it in the fridge can inpact its overall shelf life. If you want to be safe, just keep it out of the fridge.

I wish I knew more of the science of this kinda stuff, but I don't.

To Follow Mushy :-

There are a number of web sites that suggest storing the ma'assel in the fridge?! Smoking-hookah.com is one of them.

I used todo it, then removed all of the shisha to a kitchen cupboard, i can't personally tell any difference in the smoke and/or quality of the smoke?

To be honest, I thought the fridge thing sounded kind of backwards, being more of an expert on cigars I know they should NEVER go in the fridge, since it dries them out.

I'll try leaving it at room temp for a while and have another smoke later this week. Thanks for the advice.

To comment on the honey idea, I've done it many times. And yes, it does work. Just be sure to mix it in good with your shisha. It's a good strategy when you're in a pinch.

Glycerol is a substance that is used for many things, including as a food aditive. It has a sweet taste, and will keep things wet. It does not evaporate at room temperature, nor will it freeze and even -20 C. Glycerol is what keeps your shisha wet and what produces a lot of the smoke,

I put some honey in Romman Lemon the other day. It was a little dry to begin with, so I figured I'd add it.
It made the tobacco clump together, but once its all stirred in, it works sooo well. its absolutely incredible. Probably one of the best flavors I've had so far, and I think its because of the addition of the honey. Definitely a worthwhile addition if its dry.

the air in your fridge is more dry than air in room temperature. its true, look it up. so i would blame your fridge for drying out the tobacco. Im gonna have to agree with yash that it is a lot better to just store it in a airtight container at room temperature

I HIGHLY recommend, leaving the shisha in the fridge in an open container. Then get some fish, any kind will do. I personally prefer halibut, and leave that in an open container next to all your shisha. Leave it for a few days then go back and smoke. Man its the best taste you will ever have. You thought your Watermelon/Kashmir Peach was badass now. Wait till you try that. wink.gif
