Coconut Coals and Microwaves

So on the shisha-world site, one of the reviewers of the Coconut coals talked about using a microwave to heat the coal (in a glass, covered bowl). I don't speak german so I used babelfish for the translation - I hope it said the word microwave and not something else!

Anyway, always one to experiment, I tried this out last night, after thinking about it rationally whether the microwave might blow up or not  - I thought i'd take the risk anyway as the coal doesn't have any accelarants, and when you heat coal in a barbeque it doesn't explode. I was careful to use a covered glass bowl, but only put the microwave on for 20 seconds at a time to see how the coal was doing. As an added precaution, I stood well back in case something bad happened - have you seen that program Braniac - Science Abuse?

Result:- Hot glowing coals after 1:30 seconds in the microwave! I couldn't believe how effective this method is, although the microwave and my kitchen stank to high heaven of charcoal afterward (the mrs wasn't too pleased). I'm not sure why this method works with these coals, as I don't think there should be any moisture in the coals - maybe it's reacting with the binder? The smoke was pretty good from the microwaved coals, although they seemed to break up and ash a bit more easily than if it had been heated on the stove.

NOTE: YOU SHOULD NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I tried this with the coconut coals I ordered only and no other coals. I do not know what reaction your microwave might have with other types of coals.

damn that sounds so cool man, i need to try that with some finger coals, i wouldnt dare put quick light coals in the microwave though, the fear or something going horribly wrong is scary...and i think pretty real aswell...but yeah ill try out some finger coals soon enough and let you know how i get on.

till then

peace.

IT WORKSS!!! GOD DAMN IT!! IT WORKSS!!!!!

:D :D :D tonight i cleaned out all my hooakhs (6 of them) and set up 2 for tonights session, so when everthing was ready i got a bag of finger coals and broke up 2 peices and put it in the microwave on a clay bowl and set the microwave at 900watts for 1 minute, from the second go i could see smoke startnig to appear and a small fire being lit on the edges off the coal, after a minute the edges were all done and so i just blew on it to speed it up, it worked extremely fast and im always going to light them that way from now on, there is a problem of smell but i just left my extraction fan on, my grill fan on and my door open so that the smell would go away and it has!

its a great way of lighting finger coals, love it! :D :D :D
