Thadeus
I've never had one explode before. They've come close though. There were times when I was waiting for it to happen.
Macho555
I just got another damn coal do the same thing. It came out of the same roll too. This one wasn't as drastic though. There's ash all over the damn place now. I always light my quicklights on the flat indented part. Thats the part I put on the foil first. I'll try lighting it on the other end with the rest of the roll, and see if anything else explodes.
imonlyapuppet
I've had it happen a couple times. My theory is that they can't all be winners, the coals are supposed to have that quicklight stuff (gunpowder?) spread across the entire surface of the coal, but sometimes it all gets put right in the middle of the coal, causing a mini explosion. Keeps you on your toes, though, doesn't it?
King Mo
these instant lighting coals can be bastards, a friend of mine was picking up pieces with his bare hands after such an explosion. (it was a pretty expensive rug that was damaged) I use an electric portable coil to light all my coals, and generally use japanese coals. With the black instant discs, I pretty much always use a windscreen to cover them on the coil, and generally I try to light them with as much coverage as possible with a windscreen to minimise damage
Soup
I have bought several boxes of three kings coals and have never seen one explode. I have seen the jet flame out one side and it's not unusual for it to "pop" and lightly detatch the convexed top of the coal. Hookah scars on clothing and body? Yup! Inevitably everyone pill pick up what you thought to be an extinguished coal. All I have to say is "MOTHERF*CKER!"
jonny_lech
ha there goes the dinky table cloth.
That's why I got a nice little metal platter for $6 from Ikea that the hookah goes on. Adds to the presentation too!
Sonthert
I think humidity plays some part, also if you blow on a coal, that heats it up, potentially detonating unburned gunpowder. As nice as Lihnari's smoke, they shatter about 10% of the time. Japanese coals shatter sometimes, if you're not careful. I think there are sometimes unburned pockets of gunpowder that just need enough heat to light.
whix
lol i took this off social smokes description for the 3 kings coals
Three Kings 33mm Charcoal Three Kings Brand Charcoal is the original and best quick lighting hookah charcoal available. They light quickly and easily with a single match and do not exhibit the inconsistent lighting problems known to other brands or randomly explode like Golden Charcoals. After a Three Kings Charcoal disc is fully lit, it burns hot and clean and does not alter the taste of the tobacco as does most other quick light coals. These are the charcoals of choice for the majority of Hookah Clubs and Bars in America because of their convenience, performance, and value.
