Natural Coal vs QuickLights

Recommended Posts

I'm getting my first Hookah and would like people's input on buying NL's or natural coals. I will be smoking my hookah mostly inside as it get's too cold up here in the great north. Is rolling coals a big issue even with something small like a MYA QT?

Also with shisha, is there a lingering tobacco smell afterwards?

I haven't used natural coals that often, so I can't really comment on that. But as for the smell, yes, it does leave some kind of smell, but not like cigars or cigarettes would leave. It usually smells like whatever shisha you've been smoking. It's not a typical tobacco smell.

Natural coals like Nours seem to impart the least amount of taste IMO, with quicklites being on the other end of the spectrum...all I taste is the coal with those. I guess same goes for smell. The silver coated ones, for me, fall somewhere in the middle I guess. If you use coals that don't stink much, it's like what was just said...it only smells like what you're smoking when you're done =)

Hahaha I can't say I've ever tried using a microwave...but I'll check out that video when I get a moment. Yeah you can use any kind of lighter to ignite any kind of coal...it just depends on how long you want to wait for the outer layer to completely burn off. Placing a few coals on the bbq works just fine =) it's what I did in the early transition between quicklites and coals that don't suck. hah.
Thanks guys!  I was wondering if you could use a torch lighter for natural coals?  Would it take too long?  Also, could I just put a peice of natural coal right on the oven grill?  Or should I use a pan of some sort?
Just turn your stove on high and when it gets good and hot place the coal on it :D

natural wood coals are the best at keeping heat, not imparting any taste, etc.

only downside, is that without a torch or a fireplace/firepit they take forever, even on a hot stove/hotplate. that's easily dealt with though by placing the coals on teh stove before you even get your hookah setup, so by the time everything is ready, the coals will be ready, too :D

I prefer quicklighting coals cause im lazy like that, and also i dont like having to wait for the coals to heat up. I use 3Kings which IMO are the best QL's outs there. Goldens are all right but they are harder to light. Make sure you light them fully, any quicklights, to make sure theres no residule smell :D

I've been a natty coal user for a long time, but since moving out from college to NYC I am stuck with only using QL's for the first time. I hate them. They stink. Literally. It's almost to the point that I don't even smoke at home anymore and instead prefer to frequent natural-coal-using shisha cafes even though it's so expensive.

I mean sure, they light quickly and get nice and hot, but they impart a horrendous flavor. They also sting my throat like a motherfucker if I just barely cross the line on heat and/or time.

My kingdom for some bulk nattys or fingers again!
I can't say I've ever noticed a particular taste using 3Kings quicklights. Most other brands will totally overwhelm you with this burning coal taste.
it's not as bad on 3kings or goldens -- anything else is really bad -- the worst being these 40mm Safa-Lite brand coals i tried a long time ago.
