Kitty
Hello, I've been lurking this forum for a little while now. I had lurked it for awhile a couple of years ago, but then lost interest, because there was no way I could get a hookah, and I got depressed reading everyone elses' experiences! Anyways, I finally ordered a 10" green pumpkin hookah off ebay, so I decided that I would finally register. I'm 18, was so since June 7th this year, and I couldn't think of a user ID, so I used my kitten's name. (She has a real original name, huh? Guess it's better than my cat's name, Cat!) My real name is actually Lindsey. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here ever tried making their own shisha. I was looking up how to make it and found out that it usually has tobacco (duh), molasses and fruit pulps as well as glycerin. I did find one percentage 'recipe', but it didn't include the glycerin. It was 30% tobacco, 50% molasses and 20% fruits/spices. What I was wondering is, how much glycerin would you use? And what if you decided to use essential oils instead of fruit pulps? Anyways, if anyone has any input or wants to discuss or debate making your own shisha, I'd love to hear it!
MN Hookah
First off welcome to the forum! There have been several threads as of late dealing with homemade tobacco and the like. Hope you enjoy the forum and continue on in your interest in Hookahs and the culture. Here's one of the recent ones, you should be able to find a few more just by using the search function, because I remeber seeing them in the past... Kitty
Thanks a lot! I probably won't become a huge hookah fanatic, like others here, but I do definately enjoy smoking them! (The only shisha that I've ever tried though was the Nakhla double apple.) I'm getting some of their double apple and probably a peach to start (my fiance likes peach flavors). Kitty
Another thing, the hookah that I just bought on ebay, I don't know anything about it! Lol. All I know is that it was green and cheap, so I bought it. I would appreciate any input on this kind/type of hookah. dare2dreamer
Kitty, If you're a new smoker I'd really recommend buying some decent shisha. Making it from scratch is actually a fairly difficult process, and most people's results do not compare to the real thing.
Kitty
Lol. Well, great to know that now. Maybe it will be an excuse to get a black hookah? Well, for $23 (shipping, insurance, hookah and box of 60 charcoals) it wasn't too bad of a deal, was it?
SanguineSolitude
not a bad deal at all. just not a good shisha. i would recommend getting a Socialsmoke egyptian or the like as a good beginner hookah.
Macho555
Welcome to the forums Kitty . Yeah, buying your shisha is the way to go. Making it yourself is rewarding when done right, but for a beginner, you probably won't want to go through the large experimental process to get your shisha just right. SS is probably the best to go to if you want a better hookah. And trust me, you're going to want a better hookah, heh.
Kitty
Well, considering that I have to be extremely careful due to asthma, I don't think I'll be smoking it nearly as much as some others here.
Sonthert
Nobody in the industry uses fruit pulp. Essential oils would be far more preferable. My birthday is June 6. I think 50% molasses is to high. I use 30%, but with water to cook off. Try 35% water, 35% molasses, 30% tobacco, cook until the tobacco is dark and the steam almost stops coming out. Then add 50% glycerine by weight and flavor.
Kitty
See, I had seen someone else claim that the glycerin and the molasses should be equal, so what I was thinking was 30% glycerin, 30% molasses and 40% tobacco, then flavor it as you like... What temp do you usually use to cook it, and how long do you usually cook it for?
ghostofdavid
I have a pumpkin as it was give nto me for free, and if you babysit it, it should be fine. By that, I mean it can easily be tipped over and filling it with too much water will cause water to get in the stem and hose. But if you do not smoke that often, it should be fine for you! A lot of people like traditional Egyptian hookahs, a lot of people like Mya's (I fit in this catagory) and several people swear by Nour (if you can find them!). As far as brands and flavors of shisha, I recommend Havana Peach, Starbuzz Lemon Mint, Tangiers Marigold, Al Fakher Cola, and Al Amir Blackberry. All solid flavors! Kitty
My first will be the double apple. I have to see what the local lounge charges for a box of shisha. I KNOW I like double apple, and I'm not one to pay a lot of money to experiment... Lol. (I'm always broke, so I can't exactly afford to pay a pile for a box of shisha that I will only ever take a few puffs of.)
Kitty
I have about 7 minutes and I can call the local lounge. I'm sending the MO out to pay for the hookah, and I would LIKE to get some shisha today, but the way my fiance is being, I doubt it will happen. Either way, I've got to see what brands and flavors they have, as well as their prices...
Kitty
Well, that went well... It's $5 for 50g of shisha. I asked him if they sold shisha, his comment, "Yeah, we have everything! Come on down!" So I didn't exactly find out what flavors or brands they have, but I KNOW they have Nahkla (however you spell it) and I know they have the Double Apple, because that's where it was purchased before. Either way, I hope to get some BEFORE my hookah gets here, even though it will be excruciating to sit and stare at shisha when I have no hookah to smoke it with... Another thing... My ex used the electric stove to heat the coals... Is that a safe way to heat them or should I just make a small pit outside to heat them?
Kitty
Alright, they only had Al Waha. But, I got 50g each of peach, apple (I asked for double, but I think it's plain apple), banana and strawberry. I also bought a bowl of peach for my fiance to try it. He LOVED it! Lol. The whole time he just had one of those silly little grins on his face. Anyways, I should have the hookah by next weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to post our experiences. Sonthert
Its not a question of time, at first the steam will be thin, it will get much thicker and then thin out...then you're done.
