Bondal929
Would any of you advise against boiling the stem to get bad tastes out?
Sonthert
Yeah. If its steel, it will increase the rusting process. Alcohol will work alot better and not damage the stem as much, it would seem to me.
Bondal929
Like hard alcohol or rubbing alcohol? should it be pure or in a water solution?
Shavo989
I'm not sure if you think he means boiling the alcohol but if you do that you're likely to blow up the kitchen. I don't think boiling it will be good, it'll probably just make it rust. I just use lemon water and a brush, and occasionally I might use a paste of baking soda on the stem (make sure you rinse it really well after). Unless you want to kosher it for Passover there's no real reason to boil it.
[LB]
use lemon juice or bleach, i like bleach but make sure its completely cleaned out you really dont wanna inhale bleach.
Macho555
That seems like a really bad idea for some reason. How'd you come up with the idea?
lwieise
Boiling it is a bad idea but soaking it isn't as bad. Depends on the stem...mine was fine when I soaked it overnight in vinegar/water. The only problem with mine is the water got between the decorative metal stem piece and the actual stem pipe itself. There was water dripping out of it for a couple of days. pavlakos
i just like to pour vinegar through the stem and slosh some around in the base and then give everything a good rinsing and scrubbing.seems to neutralize any flavors and smells. pavlakos
sorry for the double post, but i forgot to mention balsamic vinegar seems to work best for some reason.
Joseph
Both ethanol and ispropanol (rubbing alcohol) are fine. I always use rubbing alcohol to clean my stem and vase. Just rinse it good.
