Exploding Three Kings? Got the fix.

Recommended Posts

This will work for the 33mm Three Kings. Take a screen type tea ball, something to act as a handle, wire wrap.
Remove chain depending on what you use as a handle, afix it to the lever on the tea balls.
Be sure that the lever closes tight and grips well, you do not want it to pop open suddenly.
do no try to put the coal directly from the tea ball onto the bowl, it flops out a little awkward so to want a pan or something. Then pick it up and place it using tongs.
My batteries went dead on my camera or I would have done the video. I will do that later and post it. It works really well especially if you light it and hold it in front of a fan :)

<EDIT>We have video!<EDIT> http://www.scalliwag.com/hookah/teaball/teaball.wmv

Well I like Three Kings but I like my carpet too so I figured before I had one blow up firsthand I would go ahead and find a fix.
If you notice in the video when I put it on the ceramic tray I put it on the side to where when I push down it pops the ball open.
It is the simplest way to open it. Be sure to lay it on something that won't burn. I pick up my tray and carry it to the hookah. Carrying it any distance with the tongs is asking for trouble.
awesome vid but i was sad that it wasnt "brought 2 u in part by shinerbock!" hehehehe
Sorry about that. When I get too caught up in making something I don't drink a lot of times. After the microwave incident I have been a little more careful too :)

my god they're slow self lighters!!!

good idea scalli!

They are Three Kings 33mm. I took and flattened the screen a bit on each side later last night. That helps get the lighter closer and makes it light quicker. It also keeps the coal more stable.
I made the hanger out of brass for to hang it off the ashtray. Normally I would light it and then hang it there until it is ready or dump it onto the clay tray.

so scalli let me get this right... some guys had a 3king or two explode so youve gone to the trouble to assume every one will explode. 5 points for cleveness - a couple hundred for the hassle involved. ill take my chances with exploding coals. i dont have enough excitement in my life anyways.

I did not have one explode yet. But I had one pop bad enough if I hadn't had enough Shiner to numb me up it would have scared me and I would have dropped it.
With my antiques and berber carpet in my study it would suck. 10 chunks pop to 10 different places and you have to move quickly to "reduce" that damage done? I like being proactive especially if it involves something that Ms. Scalli would beat the hell out of me and make me quit smoking in the house over! Now that's motivation wink.gif
