james
Has to be a few around. Recently purchased Karl Erik. I've been interested in pipes the last month or so. Feel like I'm about to turn 40 when I smoke it, though.

DizzyGuy
Heh, I"ve actually been thinking about starting a pipe smoking thread lately... I've smoked a pipe like twice before and I absolutely adored it. I was wondering what were some good brands to try, what would be a good starter pipe, and what technique do ya use to smoke it? oriteku
I had a Savinelli churchwarden and some kaywoodies. Nothing expensive but sold most of them recently down to just a grabow and my favorite meerschaum pipe. I recommend the cob to start! As for technique hrmm thats a tough one to describe. Umm pack the bowl loosely til the top then jam in about a thumbs worth into the top and light. Then retamp to get a good cherry going in the bowl. Puff regular and evenly on the bowl try to keep it so you never have to relight just tamp it as it burns down through the bowl. Clean your stem regularly and ream the bowl if your cake gets too thick or uneven, thats all I can think of right now. Have fun!
Vlax
To DizzyGuy: I agree with ,oriteku, but head to a nice smoke shop and talk to the sales persons about a good beginners blend and they'll lead to something that has very little tongue bit to it. And cost wise for the baccy is is about $4 - $6 for 2 oz. which is like 20 - 30 bowls.
Lakemonster
I smoke the pipe... I have a few "good" pipes. few Savinelli's and a Dunhill made in 1933. I used to carve and sell them a few years back..... but havent done anything lately. Heres some pics of past work. I was going to send this next one off to the CORPS show nationals..... but ending up selling it instead. Oh well.... Churchwardens sold like hotcakes.... I usually made my pipes with a warden stem and and a regular stem so the smoker could swap out and smoke however they felt at the moment. I think my favorite tobacco has to be Dunhills 3 Year Virginia. Otherwise, any black cav or mild aromatic is the norm..... once in a while I bust out the Dunhill 965.... only when the wife isnt around.
james
 Me=impressed. I've never smoked a churchwarden. Any noticeable difference? Cooler smoke? Or just personal aesthetic preference? The only pipe tobacco I've come across so far have been custom mixes by a shop in the DFW area. Haven't been smoking long enough to branch out to any name brands yet.
Lakemonster
Yeah. smokes a little cooler for sure..... but you can trick yourself into getting your bowl too hot. So, you have to keep your timing in mind. You also need to stoke them a bit more gently. Great for when reading. What smoke shop in DFW do you frequent? I'll tell ya what... "house blends" usually tend to be Lane Limited bulk tobacco re-named. That way you come back and buy it from them... instead of finding it cheaper online... or mail order. Basically any bulk tobacco you buy by the OZ is going to be Lane, Altadis or P. Stokkebye. Even on Dunhill tins you will see that Lane has made the blend under licence. DizzyGuy
Ok, here's another question.... Is there any clove flavored pipe tobacco? I'm gonna go to a shop in the area soon, probably tomorrow, and get the 411 on what they have... maybe even pick up a romeo and julietta to try a cigar as well... I hate driving in Frisco, but it's where IKEA and the closest *decent* smoke shop are. Repackaged or not, the price wasn't too bad.

goatling
I love pipe smoking... if I could get away with it I'd probably smoke all day long. I've acquired a bunch of pipes over time, not all of which proved to be good smokers in the long run. The best are a couple of Ser Jacopos, an Italian company. Also some Nordings, Savinellis, Brebbias, and a Karl Erik. Tobacco wise I like both English and Virginia blends. I've recently started trying Virginia/Perique blends like Esoterica Dunbar, Pease Haddo's Delight, and Cornell & Diehl Bayou Morning Flake. A nice thing about pipe tobacco, unlike shisha it gets better with age, so I have a bunch of tobacco stashed away, slowly getting better and better. (Also as insurance against the day they outlaw the stuff completely!) Pipe smokers tend to dork out about their hobby... check out Tobaccoreviews.com or tobaccocellar.org. SanguineSolitude
how does one properly store pipe tobacco?
kitefanatic
Most of us just can it in Mason jars, or buy tins and stock them away.
SanguineSolitude
ive only smoked pipes a few times and was wondering what the approximate feel of the tobacco is when the people who review it say its "perfect moisture for smoking." also if you have a suggestion for a good beginners tobacco that isnt too strong, doesnt have much tongue bite, and is really tasty please let me know. Lakemonster
Sang...... I personally reccomend straight Black Cavendish for a good starter.... ask your tobacconsist about it. They'll put you on it. Um....... this may sound vague.... but usually the blends that have little to no "lighter colored" strands of tobacco in them means that there is going to be less bite to it. The lighter stuff is usually some flue cured. or have not undgone a heavy amount of fermentation. +1 on the Mason Jars.
