Bean
Hello all, Im having some problems with heat management. I usually start my bowl with two three kings and move to one after the bowl has heated properly. It starts great with two, and when it begins to get slightly harsh i move one off. the problem is when i do that, i lose alot of smoke and flavor. but using two makes it harsh. Ive tried breaking one coal up or both and about any broken coal combo possible and still having trouble. any suggestions other than switching to japanese coals? Johnny_D
hmm. Depends on the size of the bowl i would guess. I use a fairly big bowl and allways use two 3-kings (or similar) and two for the 2nd session of the bowl. I also use a wind cover (in doors) and this i lift on and off to regulate the heat. Which works ok So maybe two are just too much and one not enough? Try 1 & 1/2. JD

Bean
its what you would call a modern bowl i guess, comes with the junior hookahs, really small. Ive been smoking hookah since about May of this year and ive learned everything from this forum. Ive tried breaking the coals but 1& 1/2 gives me thin smoke and no flavor. Im smoking fakher which is known to be an easy tobacco so is it my bowl?
Macho555
WOW three coals with a mod bowl??? I barely ever have to use two...are you allowing the WHOLE bowl to heat? I think your just rapid cooking that top layer of tobacco with the three coals, and once you take them off, youre left with no heat since the bowl itself isnt hot enough yet. I usually use ONE coal with my junior, add a wind cover, and within ten minutes or so, I can get a one hour session with thick white clouds. worr lord
Same as Macho. I use one quick light coal with a wind cover combo bowl, and every 5-10 minutes I move the coal around the bowl, and use the wind cover to help regulate the heat nicely. After the coal is lit, try letting it sit for a few minutes, and then place it on your foil and let it sit for another minute or 2 before you start smoking. It usually takes a few good puffs after that to get mine going, but it eliminates the need for extra heat when starting

For the baby i do exactly the above. JD
PhatBeezie
I always find even if just using one coal to start a bowl it wont start good until I at least break it in half and then I dont need to put more on for a while , I dont see how people use 2 at once that would make mine hella harsh. Scheetz
I use 2 33mm 3kings stacked on top of each other for every bowl. It adds the extra heat but not as much as two side by side. Works great for me, just blast through coals faster.
Bean
no im not using 3 coals. Im using two side by side. but ive tried every combo possible, breaking the coals, etc. if i use one, its seems to be too little, two is too much, 1 and one half isnt enough, breaking them up every way possible is too little. Maybe a wind cover would work.
Sonthert
Make sure, Bean, that the tobacco in the bowl is touching the sides of the bowl and not mounded up in the center...that may help. Using 2 three Kings IS alot.
james
How are you packing it? Are you seeing any tobacco burned to the foil when you remove the foil after a smoke?
cypherkk
I will move the coals to the very edge, maybe hang them over a little, also whenever it gets harsh, take both coals off then remove the ash. When you put them back on put them in a different spot, wait about 30 sec. before taking a hit.
