How Coconut Charcoal is made....

Recommended Posts

I was in the chat and someone said that they wanted to try Smiley’s coals…. Coconut Coals? I have been searching for some place that sells them, and I cannot find them anywhere. I think Smiley might sell them but I cannot get a hold of him.

I found this link.. It shows how the coconut coals are made.
http://www.thaisumi.com/en/coconutcompress.php

Which I found to be pretty interesting..

Anyways, I sort of remember there being a post about this a while back, but when I went to search for it there were 294 posts that came up…

Has anyone tried these? In Smiley’s blog it says you can put them out and actually light them up again?

Where can you get them?

Anyways I would just like some general info. on them..

Edit: FOUND IT!!!

I guess I was using the wrong option on the search>???

I have been using the coals from Smiley for a few days now. They are not rock hard like those from Germany. In fact you can break up the larger pieces between your fingers. They are quick to light with a torch and burn clean. They are not any hotter, nor do they burn any longer than fingers or jap type coals, imo. I would say the taste is as clean as the authentic jap coals that Tang uses at the Odyssey - the only true Japanese coals I've had the chance to try. I reccomend them. Hope this helps.

Are they easy to manage heat with?
The biggest reason I like using Japs is I can use one bar, broken into 4 pieces all around the bowl, and its just the right amount of heat all over. But using big pieces of japs I have definitely burnt my shisha on more than one occasion, and that would be my worry with these.
I need to call smiley and make an order!

I like smaller pieces of coal too. I can get the size I want breaking them up with my fingers. They are a bit crumbly so breaking off a piece is easy. They do produce a lot of ash.

By a lot of ash, do you mean like normal japanese coals, or more like Nour fingers (or other naturals?) where the entire coal's size is left in ash at the end.

They stay their original size, but when you move them around, any ashes fall off. Better to pick up the coal, drop it in the tray to dislodge the ashes, and then replace.
AZ from a 1-10 scale what would you give them compared to Jap coals and QL?
If real jap coals are a 10, Smiley's coconut chunks would get a 9.5. I think they burn as clean, but are slightly less convenient, and little messy. But they cost significantly less than real jap coals too. $16 for two pounds including shipping.

Diamante Jap style would get an 7.5 because they burn dirty for a lot longer. And absolutely stink until they get clean.

Diamante fingers would get an 8 because they are a way better value - big kilo bags for cheap. They also seem to burn clean sooner than "jap style" diamantes.

The only other brand I have tried is Rolland Instant lites. I'd give them about a 6. If that.

do any of you think they share ANY properties with finger coals? Do the ashes look anything like the fingers, or the smell when lighting? I need to gather as much information as I can before I even consider purchasing these.

I've got the ones from shisha-world.com - they come in a rectangular pieces which I break up into 2 (with a knife and hammer - they're quite tough). takes about 5 mins on the gas hob to light, but do last for ages. I do have a slight problem with heat management - but no more than I do with my 3kings. They are my coal of choice for now as they do burn pretty cleanly.

are there any chemicals in these coals?
