Axis
Hello everyone, So I'd like to know what people feel the best style of bowl is. The kind I've got is pretty standard... average depth/width. One of my friends has a very deep bowl which smokes very well (though I don't know if that's just the bowl or perhaps his style of packing or the hookah itself...) and I've heard that deep bowls are often preferable. I have also heard that shallower, broader bowls are good for getting the flavor of the tobacco. I'm a relatively new, not super sophisticated smoker, so I'd really like to know what more experienced hookah heads have to say on the issue. ASUSEAN1
It depends on your syle of packing like you said. I prefer a deeper bowl because i can pack the tobacco loosley and still have a lot of room between the tobacco and the foil which calls for a smooth hit and you wont burn it. Im not to sure the shallower bowls will give you more flavor. I usually end up putting less tobacco in a shallower bowl so it wont burn up because the tobacco is close to the foil. Shavo989
I used to have a standard Egyptian bowl (relatively shallow and relatively flat bottom) then I broke that one and got a standard MYA bowl (deeper, sloped bottom). It took a little adjusting of my heat management in orger to get the most out of the tobacco as it would still have a little moisture at the bottom of the bowl. The best I can tell you is experiment, experiment, experiment. You'll have it down soon enough.
aronparsons
My preferred bowl is what most sites will call a "large Egyptian" or "large ceramic". It's wide, shallow, and holds about 20g of tobacco. Because it's shallow, all of the tobacco gets cooked as opposed to deeper bowls where the tobacco on the bottom is usually still wet at the end of a session. The only downside is that it takes a little more coal to heat the larger surface area, but I get the best results with 3 Japanese coals with this bowl (about 60-70 minutes of thick, flavorful smoke without ever touching the coals).
