ASUSEAN1
I have a lot of experience with three kings quicklights and japanese style coals but want to try something new. Any suggestions? Thanks, Sean

Captain Courageous
hmm, I am not familiar with the Japanise style coals but I had always loved Nour's natural coals until I just coulden't find them around anymore so now I use Al Ajdad's natural coals because I bought them once thinking that they were Nour coals since their bags of coals have the same exact artwork of the Nour bags which is strange to me. I have ordered them three times now and the batchs seem to vary from time to time in how easy they are to break apart. They are finger coals but not perfectly cylindrical but more triangular shaped so they never roll off or anything which I love but most importantly the Al Ajdad coals are nice quality coals that don't smoke while you are lighting them, smell bad or taste bad so I defenantly recommend them. HAHkoo
from my understanding i don't think there is "the best" coals i'd say that coals that burn long have no coal taste and burn hot. are quality coals. IMO: 3kings, canary japanese coals, and nour coals (natural)
Bleeding_Heart1
from what i have tried(3kings, goldens, nour, scallies, some random patrafied tree the med. resturaunt here was selling) and the best by far was nour. GET THEM NOW
[LB]
You have discovered the best intant light coals, so if you wanna try something else go for natural coals- which you can pick up anywhere- your supermarket- it doent matter- throw them on the range until they are glowing red hot with a thing layer of ash around and then throw them on your bowl and fire up! The smoke is different typically- cleaner and whiter i find- kind of interesting. Im gonna do that tonight

Sonthert
Japanese! Japanese! Japanese! Going back to natural coals at this point is like backwards evolution, man. Stay Japanese! 8)

PK
I'm currently using 3K and starting to consider the Canary Golden Japanese everyone around the boards keeps raving about. Is it an issue that I have a gas stove? I heard something about lighting them with a zippo. What are my options?
skiracerj1
you pretty much need a stove or torch for any japanese type coal, unless you have a lot of patience to hold a light for ten minutes. But a gas stove will work, so will an electric stove or hot plate, if it'll fry food it'll start a coal

I just purchased some Easy- lite coals, but have yet to try them out. That will change after today though I've also heard lots of good comments about the Canary's
lilotaku
Golden Canary and Abu Hitams. Abu Hitams being the greater of the 2, but the more harder to find. Make sure when buying Japanese coals, that they are actually from Japan. There are a lot of rip-offs out their. Ksblazer, the Easy-Lite japanese "style" coals are nothing like the Golden Canary's. They put off more of a noticeable odor and taste IMO.

I can't do this so it seems my only option is to put it in a small pan? Do I need to worry about ash/spark/silver making a mess around my stove? Also: sonthert which brand of Jap coal(s) that you found to work well.
lilotaku
Ks, I thought you were talking about the actual "Easy-Lite" japanese knock off coals. Those are the ones that aren't so good. When it comes to instant lights, I would say 3 kings are my favorite when traveling. I've tried Sultans before and i would still say 3 kings is better IMO. I haven't tried rollands yet. I do believe that Sonthert as well as I am big fans of Abu Hitam japanese coals. Golden Canary comes in a good 2nd to those it seems and are much more readily available. ksblazer
Sorry for the confusion, here is what I'm talking about http://stores.ebay.com/Taqseem <-- For quick reference http://mnhookahs.com/popup_image.php?pID=44 <-- For quick reference These are knock off's aren't they :?:
lilotaku
Yup, those would both be the knock-off japanese coals. I would just stick with Golden Canary's or Abu Hithams if you can find some. Its pretty noticeable the difference between the quality of real japanese coals vs knock-offs.
