ASUSEAN1
i agree with tobes, if your tht cheap dont bother smoking hookah. I mean if you can buy a pack of cigarettes every day you can afford to spend 12 bucks every couple weeks to get a box of coals. I mean seriously
pimpnmagnum
QUOTE (pimpnmagnum)I guess I should stop being such a cheap ass and go for some quality hookah coals. I just figured it would be ok to use the kingmans because when you bbq theres like 20+ coals and no ill effects...but I certainly don't want to risk CO poisoning. I believe I have made it clear that I will no longer use kingman coals.

CaliforniaRose
What about a sticky with important facts about hookah, including why you should never use bbq coal?
pimpnmagnum
finally, constructive criticism. I suggest we have a sticky including all hookah basics and warnings. Like rose said
EvansLight
Yea we might do that. If we do more than likely it will wait for the new forum system.
SanguineSolitude
pretty sure it was unneccessary for everyone to jump on this thread and say omg how stupid. keep those opinons to yourself, especially when someone is asking a serious question that could have serious and dangerous medical implications. Sonthert
Sanguine speak wise-like. Chill out, dudz... Like I said, lots of people have and still continue to do so, using Kingsford Charcoal. We can be arrogant and say "Well, my charcoal's the best, man!". Nobody knows for sure...just cause it says for hookah doesn't make it any safer than the box that says "For Incense Burner" or "Do not use indoors for risk of death!". Those companies in other countries aren't regulated by the USFDA or US OSHA or US EPA. They may have very little scientific or chemistry knowledge that pertains to these charcoal and they may not know how or why charcoal are harmful, from a very specific sense. To assume because they come in a bag with a picture of a guy smoking a hookah and are sold by xyzhookah.com doesn't make them safer, in fact there is a possibility they may be more harmful. Can we agree, at least, that most of us here wouldn't use those coals? I think so...I think thats all that really needs to be said.

JoeLipinski
I highly agree with tangiers. I also think that people making rude comments like "you dumbass" - tobes shouldn't really be commenting. I understand that it was something that wasen't pretty smart, but you don't need to call him a dumbass. Also one of the forum members found some bbq coals that were safe for hookah, but it was a specific type... I think all natural mesquite or something like that, but bbq coals are a big no-no usually. hope that pimpnmagnum is fine heath wise.
pboyle
I think any charcoal that comes in a bag. Like a big one. The kind of bag similar to what dog food comes in. extra large. paper. The kind you expect next to a grill or campfire for a dutch oven is just a bad idea. I mean... we can all do what we want. but i'll never use charcoal that I can buy at a hardware store. just.... won't happen.
Rich
I appreciate the topic pimpn. There are lots of new people out there like me who might not know better, and can possibly wind up injuring themselves temporarily or even permanently. I think you would have been a "dumbass" not to ask.
ASUSEAN1
alright i kno were done with the bashing but i must say one more thing: yea while your using those kingsman coals do you fill up the base with lighter fluid too? seriously haha
pimpnmagnum
You know, I'd really like to see some scientific tests comparing the levels of carbon monoxide in hookah coals to bbq coals. I really wouldn't be to surprised to see if hookah coals weren't much healthier. What people dont seem to understand is that these foreign coals are imported from third world nations where the FDA and these product safety regulations don't exist. I'm not saying that bbq coals are safe and I definitely will discontinue my use. Just don't act all high and mighty because you use designated hookah coals that dont have any warning on them at all. And pboyle, do you have a phobia of large paper bags or something? You make it sound like because it was in a paper bag that was a clear warning sign that it was fatal. Tobes
yo the reason i called him a dumbass is cuse he first tried the kingsman bridgetes then he asked if they were safe. he's a dumbass cuse he used the coals then decided to find out whether or not they were safe. Sonthert
I've had that in mind for awhile, pimpnmagnum...finding out the CO production of various charcoals. The interesting one is also do charcoals that burn hotter produce more or less CO than ones that burn cooler? Heat is a product, so Lavoisier's Principle (No, I don't know how to spell it right) tells us, that tends to slow the reaction down, or shift the equillibrium back to the reactants. On the other hand, heat tends to make chemical reactions run faster. So, we would have to examine the kinetics to find out whether heat in this process speeds it more than it slows it down or vice versa...or maybe even make a negligible effect. Sonthert
Was there poison in this glass that I just drank? I should have asked first. I think thats what Tobes is trying to say. Lets not take this all too seriously, people. We don't smoke hookah to relax and then give it all back by getting upset on the Forum...do we? X( Joking, people, joking. I love you guys.
