Mogwai
I bought a hookah recently, and have been using natural coals. I have had some trouble getting the shisha to go when i was using foil/grate. So started placing the coal on the shisha; but I'm having trouble with it burning to fast/burning in general. Any solutions?
DizzyGuy
Well, putting the coal right on the tobacco is a no no unless you have very specific kinds that you prett ymuch won't run into. If you can't get the stuff to smoke with foil or a screen on top, try adding coals...
Scalliwag
How are you lighting the coals and are you getting them good and lit? My guess is that you are not. You may not have enough shisha in the bowl also. Get it to where it is about 1/8 inch below the foil and put a nice glowing coal on it and see if that helps. yashman19
In many parts in the middle east, that is the only way they smoke their hookah. BUT, they use a slightly different type of tobacco, known as tombak, zaghoul. kass etc etc.. It has a slightly different consistancy, and their bowls are set up slightly differently, but yeah they put the coals directly on top of the tobacco. As for the foil, were you using the thick aluminum foil or just the regular non heavy duty foil? I've used both, and from what I've seen using the heavy duty foil takes much longer to get the bowl going, and when it does get going, it has a tendancy to burn much easier. I attribute this to the fact that with more metal, it conducts heat much easier. but, it does take a bit longer to get smoking. If this is the case, use regular foil. And also make sure you pack your bowl close to the top. I normally sprinkle my tobacco all the way to the brim of the bowl, and then gently pat it down so its a few millimeters below the foil. Many different ways to pack a bowl, and maybe you were just packing your bowl too low?
Sonthert
Yeah, I agree with Yash...putting charcoal directly on to modern maasel seems not to work too well. The tobacco they do that with is much, much drier and partially burns...thats why its not too much of an issue. With our more modern stuff, if it burns, it tastes awful. I think you should get a roll of foil and work on packing the bowl differently, try one thing see if it makes it better or worse, then try something else and see what makes it smoke better and what seems to make it smoke worse. Mogwai
I got it going good last night, used two coals with a grate. Plus I think I got the packing done better. I'm also running low on coals, and am looking to buy some Quick lite coals, any suggestions on brands/where to buy from?

EvansLight
yea for quicklights 3Kings are the best. A box you can get anywhere from $10-15 and it lasts a while, i use about a roll every 3-4 bowls, or a roll every bowl i smoke if i use the funnel bowl XD oh i need to get naturals... anyways I would try either MNHookah or SocialSmoke for the 3kings, they are where i get mine
