wouldnt that be because you packed it too full? i dont see how a metal screen gets the shisha hotter than a thin metal piece of foil. im pretty sure everything can work really well as long as you control your heat and spacing right.

because metal transfers heat and aluminum doesn't.. i think.. everytime i use a screen and don't pack it full it burns it as well. I think the holes are too big for my tastes. I have a system down that I use with foil that works fantastically and I don't use very many holes

I've seen various hookae offered with aluminum parts - I even have a temporary aluminum pipe replacing the middle of the stem after the girl i was dating last year accidentally knocked over my hookah and the threads at the top of the stock midpipe cracked.

However, I recall when I was in the military and a warning was issued about our IMPs (MREs to Americans - same idea). We would heat the sealed bags in boiling water heated in aluminum pots. Because the bags were sealed the panic factor was low, but there is medical evidence that food cooked in aluminum pots could lead to problems like increased chance of altzeimers, etc.

So is inhaling smoke and vapour drawn through aluminum tubing a similar risk?

Your on the right track, you see, the tubing of your hookah doesnt get heated, so that doesn't matter at all, the only problem is the foil you use on your bowl. Using the foil shiny side down lowers your chance of getting harsh chemicals into the smoke. If you just buy a metal bowl screen, then this isnt a problem at all. They even make foil specificly for hookahs, which I beleive has little to no harsh chemicals in it. Edited April 25, 2007 by KillZedKill

I believe that Sonthert once said that unless the aluminum foil gets hot enough to begin releasing vapors (which is at a temperature far above 450F, the average temp of a hookah coal), then there isn't much to worry about.

In fact, if you're worried about your health, don't smoke at all.

Also about the alzheimers, there is no link, there are only those subjects that have higher amounts of aluminum in their bodies, with no clear understanding of if the aluminum caused it, or if it's unrelated

+1. my friends dad is a research scientists and he has been studying alzheimers for the past 20 years and found there is no correlation to outside factors including burning aluminum foil

if anything the plastic tubing is saving your lungs from all the rust particles flying into your mouth everytime you inhale from a so called "washable" hose

i'm still using the ends from the hose, just tubing where the leather was. The brass inners of the wooden ends seem to be fine.

did you try cutting apart your hose, mya washable along with many other washables have a metal lining inside the leather..

My old hose wasn't a MYA washable - the ends didn't unscrew. I only just blew it out after every smoke.

here is another thread showing what happens when these so called washable hoses rust out..

manntis, the ends don't un-screw you have to cut them off if you are going the vinyl tubing route with these type of hoses.. but hey now you have a true washable with the clear tubing.

I got another hose from H-S, and the ends unscrew for washing so I figured that's what you meant by washable. And the hose I just cut up had a metal coil like that between the plastic & leather. Fortunately it looked pretty rust free, but still had to be cut and pulled out of the ends. Edited April 25, 2007 by manntis
