Macho555
I recently started light my 3 king coals with using these small cans of geltype sterno. They get the coals red hot in a matter of seconds , and they burn alot nicer. I was wondering if anyone else did this, that they would know if a jap coal, or natural coal could be lit like this? Thanks.
web250
Are sterno's dead after one use though?
Macho555
Nope, the gel can be used for a good while. I bought three minicans for 5 dollars, and I'm still on the first can. The gel is really slow burning, so once you extinguish it, its good for next time.

ROFL, i stole like 40 of those from the hotel next to my house... they had this president suite grand opening thing (where they left it open so that people could OOO and AAA at the magnificent splendor of it all), so we came in at 3 AM when no one was awake and we went in with a huge backpack and took all the fancy cheeses and beers... and then my friend saw all of those cans and he stuffed them in there too 3 for $5? i should start selling them back to the hotel

Thanks. In the long run you can probably save money by buying a HOT PLATE. They are pretty much a 1 person stove thats electric. they are around 8-20 bucks from your local Walmart or Target..etc.etc. They can light ANY coal within seconds. Just plug it in, heat it up, stick the coal on, and a few secs to a minute later you'll have a fully lit coal.
Macho555
Hmm...yes, I actually saw that in another thread, than completly forgot about it. o_o;; Thanks for reminding me. The hot plate will heat any type of coal? I wish to try naturals.
lilotaku
yup, just make sure to get a hot plate thats atleast 800-1000 watts. It will light ANY coal. I know this, because i have the "elite aroma" 1000 watt hot plate. I've lit everything from Nours finger coals to Abu Hitham and Golden Canary japanese coals with it. Just heat it up and your good to go. It gets freaking hot.

CaliforniaRose
See but hot plates require an electrical outlet, sternos do not.
nuschultz
right, and hotplates are NOT a good thing to use in dorms.
CaliforniaRose
Not only "not good" at my college hot plates are illegal in the dorms.
Macho555
Huh..well, luckly I don't have that problem...I don't even have dorms. I'll have to stop at Walmart and see what I can find. 1000 watts huh?
pboyle
i like the sterno idea because then i could like... go camping and smoke hookah. I could even smoke hookah on a canoe in the midde of a lake if i wanted to. while the hot plate is practical and works well, the sterno just seems... very very useable. EvansLight
Creme Bruele Torches FTW XD best for lighting QL coals, and ive found they work decent (if you got a good one) for natural. Benzo torches pawn though, light a natural in a few seconds

I actually have one of those creme bruele torches (i have all manner of cooking gadgets laying around) but i hate them, they use butane like there's no tomorrow.
