Canary Golden Japanese Charcoal - My 1st experience

Recommended Posts

well.... not so good but I don't blame the charcoal, I blame Ikea !?

Heard so many great things about this charcoal that I ordered some and received my package today. I knew it was coming today so I prepared a little for it. I have a gas stove so my option was to cook some up on a small pan but didn't want to use my expensive cooking-ware for this, instead went to Ikea and bought a $2.70 13inch skillet to heat these bad boys up. I took 3 cubes and popped them in, let them sit for a few and they caught up rather quickly which was nice. Only problem was that my skillet's handle did as well... sorta. The handle started smoking and stunk up my house like burnt plastic so I immediately took the charcoals out to get the skillet in the sink to cool it down. The first place I could set the coals for the time being was a glass ashtray next to my stove, so I did. Rinsing off the skillet I heard a loud POP and picked my head up and thought "what the F was that?!" I turn around and the glass ashtray was split in half and the coals were laying on my counter top. Yes, I know stupid move, but cut me some slack I was confused at the quick turn of events. Amazingly, my countertop wasn't burnt as I caught it in time to get them in the hookah tray, should have done it from the start!!!

Soooo... when I was done cleaning up the mess I had a chance to puff away.. FINALLY and I was impressed on the taste using these coals..

Maybe next time I won't F things up so badly :-(

you think? haha

Never tried the Japanese easy lights, but from what I hear they are actually made in China. People seem to like them but I've never used them.

Ok, here's a method to try... use a surface that can withstand heat. *I use an old metal pot with a windscreen in the bottom... The windscreen's legs are bent down so that the heat will dissipate and not get the pot as hot. Light the cubes on the exposed side with a lighter or better yet a buntane lighter... and set it so that the hot, red side is facing up. Let this set for several minutes and the coal will light itself. The important thing is to make sure it lights all the way through the coal and that the silver coating comes off. BTW, if you use a pot/skillet to heat up the coals, don't make it a non-stick kind.

I have one up on you wiht the mistakes of hot coals tongue.gif A while back, Scally made some natural coals and passed out some samples, I was lucky to get some... but here's the thing, I didn't have a blow torch at the time and I had never used natural coals. So, thinking I knew what I was doing from reading a little on the forum, I crank up the stove to max heat and use a pot *the one I use as my coal lighter/ash tray now* and put some coals in it... well, it never got the coals fully going so it didn't work, but the thing is, with my inexperience and excitement, when I took the pot upstairs and set it on a little heat pad thing... It burned the heat pad... like scorched it and smelled horrible. Had to go throw that in the sink. Well, I was in the bathroom and dind' tknow what to do with the pot, so I set it on the countertop... big mistake, it scorched the counter top some too. It sucked, but I've dremeled off the burn and I'm gonna put some kind of finish on it to try to make it look better

Just go to walmart, target or any store like that. I bought my electric stove at walmart, it was the cheapest one they have. Its the one with the circular coils on top. simply place the coal on the coils, they narrow enough so the coals wont fall through if you place them right. It heats up in a few minutes and then just move them into either a charcoal carrier, or directly to your charcoal tray on your hookah.

I got a hot plate from target it was about 20 dollars.

Walmart has one for 10 but they were out of stock at all the walmarts in town.

It works pretty well, I don't know if I woud prefer the coils or the hot plate. I think the coils would be faster but the hotplate is very easy to clean.
