Best Way to Start coals

Recommended Posts

coals are bery annoying, especially if you dont have a stove or grill around to start them with. i found the easiest way to start them is with a cheap blow torch, from fred myer or home depot or whatever. its takes about 30 seconds to get a new coal burning red hot and decreases the time to warm up the bowl to practically zero. by your second hit tis amazing........

I bought a nice bush-botton start propane torch from Home Depot. The cannisters of propane are only ~$3, and the push button valve was around $30. Of course you don't need the fance expensive push button model, and a regular $10 valve will work just fine, but I'm cool like that, so ya know..

Also, take a drive to your local Target or Walmart. I got me a single coil stove for like $9. I like it better than the torch because you don't have to buy a replacment canister of propane every couple months. Sure it takes a few minutes longer, but does the trick damn nicely.

LOL, you'd better have ALOT of patience and ALOT of lighters if you're using natural coals.

Definitely been there, done that. It was my freshman year of college and we were just getting into hookah. Of course we didn't have a torch or stove. Instead we would huddle around and shield the person with the lighter from the wind, and pray we could get it going before the lighter became to hot to hold...

After we'd get one end BARELY going, we'd take turns blowing on it until it got some more progress. Then we'd lay that coal on the tray and set another coal on top of it piggy-back style and continued to blow until the other started to get lit on its own.

We had to make sure we always had atleast one coal partially lit so we could start the next coal by setting them on top of each other, so we woudln't have to bust out the lighter again...
