magus
i have tried 4 tangiers flavors and its always harsh (cocoa, melon, blueberry & watermellon). i use a bowl with an attached wind cover and the small 3 kings coals. when i open the wind cover, i get no smoke, when i close it, its harsh. also, when i put my tongue in front of the hose, i always get lots of residue on my tongue. when i do this, it is less harsh. this leads me to believe that the harshness is caused by that residue, which i dont get from any other brand so far. what can i do? ksblazer
How much coal are you using? I use 3, 1/2 peices of 3 kings coal for Tangiers and it seems to work well for me. Tangiers is very sensitive to heat and this could be the problem for you.
magus
oh, i just use one. i will try breaking it in half and only using one half and let you know what happens. how do you break it? with a knife?
ksblazer
After re reading your post I kind of wonder if the wind cover could have something to do with the heat level as well. I think the windcover traps some of the heat in there. Experiment by using less coal. I break 3 kings in half by hand.
SanguineSolitude
yeah break 3kings before lighting. its not hard to do, just be kinda gentle in snapping them otherwise youll crush them into like 10 pieces instead of halves.
skiracerj1
how are you packing the bowl? that can have a big effect with tangiers.
magus
QUOTE (skiracerj1)how are you packing the bowl? that can have a big effect with tangiers. ive tried packing it lightly by breaking up the leaves and sprinkling them in, and ive tried squishing them together and squeezing them in, and ive tried just putting them in the way they are in the bag, but it hasn't been less harsh unfortunately. hopefully using half a coal will work
xpimpitox
get a funnel bowl. it really does make a difference for whatever magical reason. no matter how i would pack my bowl of tangiers in a regular, like 90 percent of the time it was harsh in about 10 mins. with the funnel bowl, every bowl of tangiers is 10x smoother and it makes any brand you smoke outta it last twice as long as claimed by many people on here. i finally caved in and got one and it was one of the best hookah purchases i ever did. cymptom
You guys who use 3 Kings: Do you use the 33mm or 40mm? I often get bad results using the 33mm, but my brother's 40mm coals work rather well consistently. I was thinking that maybe the 40mm coals burn cooler... MN Hookah
I've never had a problem with 33mm coals myself, do you mean consistency in the way they light up and burn?
magus
i prefer the big ones, but i accidentally ordered 2 boxes of the 33 so i am stuck with them for now. i just prefer the big ones cuz they last longer, other than that i havent really seen a difference. i just ordered a funnel bowl from hookahcompany, along with some more tangiers. thanks for your advice guys, i'll let you know what happens
skiracerj1
hmmm, maybe just let it acclimate more, I've noticed that sometimes I have to leave the tobacco open overnight before its fully ready to go. Something elwse I've heard people ahve done is using an herb grinder and grinding the tobacco up into finer pieces, never tried it myself, but people have said it works. Other than that just read tangiers' how to pack a bowl article on hookah wiki http://www.hookahwiki.com/index.php?title=...rd_Bowl_Packing if you follow that it should work, if not more acclimating is the only thing I can think of
rootdown
the reason you want it to have big pieces so theres areas between the tobacco that air can pass thru
Scheetz
for me, I use 1 33mm 3kings coal. I use a regular medium sized bowl, maybe 25 grams tops, not a phunnel. Put the coal in the middle of the bowl and get it started, then move it to the outside with half the coal hanging off the bowl so you only get half the heat. This works perfect for me and I just move it around the edge and complete the circle.
art_official
would using a phunnel create a more concentrated "harshness"? in other words (scheetz) why wouldnt one use a phunnel bowl?
ASUSEAN1
QUOTE (art_official)would using a phunnel create a more concentrated "harshness"? in other words (scheetz) why wouldnt one use a phunnel bowl? a phunnel bowl keeps the juices in the bowl, so in theory the bowl should last longer and not be harsh becuase it wont burn as easy. With tangiers i keep a gap between the foil and the tobacco and never have a problem with it being harsh. I put a 1 three kings on the bowl and move it to a new spot about every 30 minutes. pboyle
i smoked tangiers for the first time today (with the phunnel bowl) and I have to say it isn't harsh at all. is it strong? absolutely. The bowl could've gone for a full 2 or 3 hours without loosing anything, but I could only last for maybe... an hour? couldn't even take big hits after a while. ridiculous stuff but not harsh. just.. powerful
ASUSEAN1
i agree with PBoyle..Its strong shit but tastes amazing. After a couple session you will get used to it and be able to take huge hits again.
pboyle
i think it depends on how many coals you used. the wind cover is good to keep the heat in, thus giving you tooooons of smoke and I did that for a while, but downgraded to just two golden coals quicklights. worked fine. it takes a little experimenting but, you get it. change your setup more than the flavors. you'll figure it out
Scheetz
QUOTE (art_official)would using a phunnel create a more concentrated "harshness"? in other words (scheetz) why wouldn't one use a phunnel bowl? well, the phunnel does keep all the juices in place and not all down your stem. But I clean my hookah enough that it doesn't bother me. I smoke Layalina all the time, so its juicy enough with that. But, I don't use a phunnel for the sole fact that I don't own one. My sessions normally go for about an hour if not hour thirty. Even with tangiers smoking for a long time, i just use less tobacco so its a shorter smoke. I don't want a phunnel because its going to use more than I want to smoke for. And with a full packed bowl of Tang, I can get that going for more than 2 hours with a single 3kings on at each time. art_official
is it harsh for those of you that smoke cigarettes? ive heard people compare a tang. hit liek a big hit from a light cigarette i smoke (hookah almost 2every day and a pack a week) and im not really scared of the power (im actually excited for it) because i do have such a high tolerance for tobacco/nicotine

If I do what I posted in this quote you wont feel the strength all that much. It will taste perfectly fine and you will enjoy the session. Now if you want something hard hitting, you should try this shit I made the other day. One of the brands of tobacco from turkey almost knocked me off my feet. The nicotine hit was ridiculous. I had to take some Advil to get the head ache to go away. And trust me, this was almost comparable to getting a migraine for me.

Lazy Dayz
If tangiers is too harsh, 99% of the time its because you didn't let it air out. Humidity shock will ruin you're tangiers smoking experience, so just open it up and let it air out for like 2 hours. Yes, it takes patience, but the payoff is fantastic. PK
Last night was my first experience with Tangiers, tried my batch of watermelon. I didn't pack up the phunnel because I wanted to try a standard MYA first as I haven't mastered the phunnel yet with any. I used 1 x 3 king and was getting decent smoke using my normal method of heavy foil and a good amount of holes. I wouldn't say Tangiers is harsh, it's just very different and does somewhat taste like a cigarette to me. I don't know, I opened the package and let it air out overnight to prevent the humidity shock but it still smelt like charred tobacco, definately not a fruity smell when your sniffing the batch. This flavor pretty much carried onto the taste which was decent, but I wouldn't call it watermelon. I hear everyone raving how true to flavor Tangiers is but I'm not seeing those results YET. Again, the tobacco almost smells burnt in it's packaging to me. I won't be giving up anytime soon and I'll be working at it.
