alright, i just dont understand, what is the point of this so called leet speak? i understand shortening words such as u, ya, ur, and what not but whats up with this crap like using number and symbols, like in the heading instead of just letters?

It just developed to messing around in games and when all out... I think it's pretty gay, but some people will do anything to be "popular"

It's just a different orthographic representation (a code or cipher) of English... to uphold a definite in-group identity.
The idea being that non-geeks will find it difficult to decipher, and thus won't read what it says... leaving the geeks to their own devices.

this dates back do the days of BBS' where people would use 1337 speak to use less bandwith(very important with a modem only 1/4th the speed of AOL)

also works well against swear filters

I used to be able to do a good amount of leet when I was like 14-15, but I've forgotten it all now. Thank god.

if thats what it is then sure i know pretty much nothing about codes (or there names) and the such i leave that to my friends i only build the stuff i went to school in iowa and they didnt really get much into the names they just gave use stuff to do and pushed us on our merry way.
