Gryz
Hi, pretty new to hookahs, and was invited to a lounge the other day. I have been reading up on all I could but was unable to find this question. When the lounge saw that our first coal was out, the waitress came over and squashed another coal ontop of the one we were using to get it to light. I thought that you were to let the coal light and burn for a while before adding it to the bowl, and I also was curious about the fact that the ashes probably went into the shisha when she squashed it with another coal. Am I mistaken, or are these common practices?
ASUSEAN1
yea some hookah bars do this, jus dont hit it til the coal is completely lit and then take off the coal with the ash on it
mushrat
Depends on the type of coal she used. If it was a little round quick light disk, then I'm suprised they did that. The start up smell/taste can be pretty nasty with a quick light. The same is actually tru of the finder coals. If it was an already hot/white quicklight or finger coal, then it was acceptable, and actually a nice thing for them to do, it extended your smoke without charging you extra. When you started smoking again, did you get a nasty taste form the coals she'd added?
Gryz
Thank you for your responses. I do believe it was a quicklite...it was round and sparked for several seconds when she added it ontop of the other coal. I didn't remember having a bad taste, for we waited several minutes after this was done to take another hit. Wouldn't the ashes fall into th shisha through the holes and possibly give a bad taste? I would have thought that you would take off the old coal before adding another.
aronparsons
The proper thing to do is for them to add another coal only after it's been fully lit to avoid imparting any bad flavor on the session; however, just like any other place, shitty service exists in hookah lounges as well. Lakemonster
I do that at home all the time..... I just dont take any pulls till I see that the coal is at leas 3/4 glowin. Personally wouldnt bother me if I went to a lounge that did that.
40 Thieves
pre lit coals are the norm - but I wouldn't worry about ash too much getting in the bowl.
Erica
Ash getting in really doesnt effect the flavor at all....
SanguineSolitude
lots of lounges do that.. its not ideal but its alot easier for them. it doesnt bother me much
Scheetz
Heh, I hate it. Nothing really aggravates me more than a fresh lit coal being placed on my bowl while they push all the ash into it. I like to remove the bowl and blow through it before I put the second coal on. Of course some lounges have them locked down so if it doesn't pop off easily I just leave it. I am surprised I havent been asked to leave though. A lot of lounges don't like you touching the coal and the bowl. I feel it adds to the flair of smoking when you can take part in it somehow. Sure I pack bowls all the time and what not, but my friends enjoy being able to do something since they have learned tricks from me.
DizzyGuy
Ash will get in the bowl anyways but it won't matter... esp if the top layer of tobacco is already burned
nevermind
i dont think you guys have had a quicklite start up on top of your bowl, its smell and tast is disgusting.
EliteHookah.com
If I'm going to pay $10 for a head somewhere I expect them to, at the very least, have pre-lit coals as part of the service. At home, on the other hand, I always light the new quick light coal off of the old one, and just wait until the sparking is done to take another hit. SanguineSolitude
nevermind... at least 5 of the posts up there directly say people have had this happen. and most of the others i assume have had it happen as well. what are you trying to say? ive had quicklights start up on the bowl many many times, and while its not preferred, it doesnt bother me that much. i just wait until its fully lit itself, purge the smoke, and go. mushrat
I'd say this topic has reached a logical conclusion andthere is no need for it to continue in the new vein it was taking...
