I have a nut on the bottom of my stem too, so I just put the top rubber fitter in some hot water and put it on, I never take it off, just the bottom part when I want to clean it.

I had the same problem and just cut the nut off. What the heck is it for anyway?

if you have the tools and your stem is long enough, put a stopper on the bottom of the stem and drill holes around the bottom of the stem itself. thats should give you the best diffusing effect. As long as the size of all the holes at least equal the diameter of the stem itself, i dont believe it will make a difference on your pull. Im waiting to see what happens with the cloth some of you mentioned; i have a feeling it will just make it harder to pull with no diffusing effect (holes should be spaced out).

Mine has a bigger hole at the bottom that i wish wasnt there; It would be better if the hole on the bottom was the same size as the other holes to have a better diffusing effect. My pictures are with a glass stem, but still the same idea:

Hmmm... never take it off? I'll have to think about that... that might not be a bad idea. I'll try it.

The nut on the bottom was put there to be as a sort of diffuser during production

I have the heba diffuser and I use it every time on my QT. The big one in the kit won't fit so I gave it to my buddy with a bigger hookah, but the little one works great.

I don't think it does anything to make the draw any different and it REALLY quiets it down a lot. That is my favorite part.

So, I recommend it. And yes, it even works with a QT.
