Hookah Noobgirl Has Stupid Questions.

Recommended Posts

I just got my big honking order from hookah-shisha.com today, and I can't wait to test it all out tonight.
This'll be my first time smoking at home, and I have a couple questions. Do I need to wash my QT or my bowl before I use them for the first time, and if so, how thoroughly?
Also, for those of you who've smoked AW, is acclimation necessary? We're having a bit of a bug problem here, and until we get an exterminator in, I don't feel comfortable leaving a sweet sticky gooey substance out for three hours. Maybe I'm weird, but I don't think I like bugs in my shisha.

So answers will be greatly appreciated, and if anyone wants to share any other tips a first-timer like me should know, please do. Thanks!

give everything a good rinse. its not essential that you do it, but its a really good idea. like any manufactured product, the factory cleaning is usually nearly nonexistant. just wash it out with some hot water and maybe a little lemon juice.

no need to acclimate al waha. but bugs shouldnt be a problem. nicotine is actually a natural bug repellant. tobacco water has been used for years to protect plants from bugs.

Thanks man.

I've also just come across another problem. Wind cover + phunnel = not working. My phunnel bowl (a "small") is too wide to fit under the wind cover.

What's the best way to make a cover out of foil? I can't seem to find any info on it using the search.

I promise as soon as I start smoking I'll be too busy to ask annoying questions!

Definately wash, warm water with some lemon juice will do it good. I dont have a huge problem with AW, although *some* acclimation might help.

Do you need a windcover? It should work fine without it unless you have gale force winds or something laugh.gif

I was going to use one indoors, actually. I'm inclined to bouts of extreme clumsiness, and I don't want to pay for it with my carpet. tongue.gif

well, if you put the hookah in the middle of a table you might prevent yourself from knocking coals off......maybe....

or you could do this trick i learned where you make a tent out of tin foil, but it only works if you are using natural coals. take regular tin foil and roll off about a one foot long section. on the long sides, fold it over about 1/4 inch as to make the edges not sharp. now lay the tin foil in front of you so that it is taller than wider (short side of foil facing you). make sure your foil cover on the bowl is on tight, and turn the bowl sideways. place the rim of the bowl in the bottom right corenr of the foil, about 1.5 inches from the side, and begin to roll the bowl away from you (the goal is to have a complete foil cylinder sticking up from the bowl when you are done that is about 6 inches higher than the bowl). now you can use your tongs to place coals down into the cylinder and either pinch the top shut or leave it open if you want to be able to mess with the coals. that should keep coals from going anywhere unless you turn the thing completely over.

i never use a wind cover. even outside. if its really windy outside, the cover wont help much. i just find its unneccessary

disagree, the coals burn faster/hotter because of more oxygen

Hahaha, no, I guess I'm not really THAT stupid of a noob. I bought my small phunnel from mnhookahs. Funny enough, it got here in about a day and a half, all the way to Florida from Minnesota. My hookah-shisha order that I made the same day just got here this afternoon. Go figure. I wish they sold more, you know, stuff. Rather than just a few very good, rather expensive things. Anyway, I guess I won't use my phunnel tonight, since I'm just trying a couple flavors and not settling in for a nice long smoke.

I'll try to get pictures up later, though they'll be cell phone and probably not of very good quality. Right now I'm busy fighting with the water level and my too-big pieces of ice. I knew there'd be more unforseen difficulties. There always are with any of my new hobbies.

i meant that even with a wind cover, if its really windy you wont get a good smoke session. In my experience a good brisk wind will either whip right through the opening in the wind cover, or if the windcover does keep it out, the annoyance of having to deal with the wind cover, removal for heat adjustment, and uneven heating(ive found) makes it not worth it to me. obviously more O2 makes the coals burn more quickly. if its extremely windy, move inside or dont smoke. thats what i meant by uneccessary. something i find unneccessary even to own. ive used my wind cover a handful of times, and usually ended up taking it off.

Im not saying dont get or use one. just know that you can live happily without one. i know some people love them, and others(me) hate em.

Well, apparently I'm really, really, *really* a noob. I made a MYA bowl of AW Strawberry, which tasted, well, meh. I'm pretty sure it has to do with me, though. I split it with my younger sister-- it was her first hookah ever (probably my fifth or sixth), and she outlasted me. I passed with her for about 30, 40 minutes before getting headspins immediately followed by nausea. THAT'S certainly never happened.
She smoked the rest of the bowl until it was cashed with nothing but a buzz. I had to go outside and hang my head over the porch rail.

I found that a wind cover was more hassle than necessary, since there wasn't any danger of the QT tipping over. So I went about my business puffing away, until it was time to put another coal on. I picked up the little spent coal after ashing it to put it back on the bowl, and it broke into two pieces. Which landed on my carpet. What did I tell you? laugh.gif Apparently my carpet is also made out of plastic wrap. It melted pretty much instantly.

Another thing I've learned: hookah water smells delicious! I think I'll never clean it, never ever, just so I can continue to smell that delicious smell! blink.gif
I'm getting a gallon of lemon juice before I even think about smoking again.

Anyone have any advice about airspace on the QT? I found it really hard to eyeball because of the pattern of the glass. And nausea? Was I not supposed to hold the quicklite up to my nose while I lit it? laugh.gif

And I promise you pictures tomorrow! I couldn't get any good ones tonight, and after I was done smoking I just passed out.

And if camera phone photos don't work, I'll just draw you a picture on MS Paint.

Oh and also, when I took the foil off the bowl, about 80% of the shisha was stuck to it. Did I pack it too full? Did I hit too hard? Do I fail it?
