*takes deep breath* This could either be enlightening for many of us, or one of the stupidest questions ever in which case I hope no one kicks me off sad.gif

Would it be a bad idea to use untreated all-natural firewood wads as coals? We have a wood burner, and as long as carbon monoxide isn't going to kill me and it doesn't taste horrendous, I don't care.

lol Yeah, briquets were never an option; there are warnings for carbon monoxide on the side of the bag, I think. But thanks guys, looks like I'll spring for the natural coals designated for hookah use. smile.gif

I don't think you can get a straight answer on your question without a little more info. What type of firewood are you planning on using? It will make a huge difference. I'm in Arizona and orange. Lemon and Grapefruit work fine. Some wood will give you a heck of a bad taste. Some wood could actually harm you.
If your looking for cheap you can pick up a 40 lb bag of best of the west all natural lump mesquite charcoal for 10 bucks and it does ok as long as you make sure it is fully lit. Chop it up with a hack saw and wear latex gloves whilst doing it. Mesquite is supposed to have a higher sulfur content, but it didn't kill hurt me or apparently anyone else that has tried it. Then again if it kills you it's not my fault biggrin.gif

Edited to add....Oh I thought you were going to convert it to charcoal...it's not that hard really. just requires a hole in your backyard and some of your time. Edited by rattler

a friend of mine uses all natural wood coals like the giant block pieces too hookah he said it gives an off flavor is you don't get them burning right in the beginning and he said a 15lb bag was like 5bucks. i've tried it with natural wood coals. not bad but takes forever to get them nice and lit and don't exactly stay lit for a long time.

haha, Literally, I'm talking about already red coals I'd fish out of the wood burner. A fire's always going because it heats our house/provides hot water (hooray for living out in the sticks). As for types of wood... Basswood is fairly plentiful, rarely we get oak or maple... you get the idea happy.gif

Yeah, I don't want to get brain damage just to save a few bucks/time. I'll be expensive and break into the rough $100 I got for the entire month to spend on random crap.

I have no idea about basswood. I made my own coals out of some small branches of orange trees in my backyard and they are fine...Lemon and grapefruit are supposed to be fine as well. I tried the mesquite lump charcoal because others have used it successfully without harm and I have a huge bag in my backyard.
I might be experimental, but I am unwilling to be the first to try something like that.

if you wanna go that route, maybe try using lazarri mesquite coals. these stuff work wonders on hookah, the only reason i really dont use them as much as i would like it that they take forever to get ready but man no extra taste or nothing. i tend to use these during the summer months when i can smoke outside comftorbly.

The reason charcoal is better than wood for cooking is that it burns better and produces less Carbon Monoxide, thats my guess. So, I guess you could use wood, but it would produce more carbon monoxide is my guess.

I should also add, that in reponse to your title of this thread "Tell me if I'm retarded." Carbon Monoxide has been recently found to be in use as a neuro transmitter. It shuts off parts of the brain, so carbon monoxide really does cause brain damage. It, some scientists believe, marks that area of the brain for "do not use".

NO Kingsfords, too much carbon monoxide, there's a warning on the side of the bag. And do you really want that 'smokehouse flavor' when you're trying something fruity? o_O

ha, i can imagine that being much like the sawdust 'fireplace' flavor that came out of my mod hookah on the first smoke.

Kingsford...hmmm...don't do it! It will ef you up and not in a good way. As a last resort I would think you would be better off trying to use a torch lighter. Honestly there are better ways to die than sucking the air off a piece of bbq briquettes. blink.gif

Now as far as the swiftlite charcoal goes there are places that actually sell it for hookah use, so I guess your alright to go for it unless somebody else has some knowledge.

But seriously, coals just don't cost that much wink.gif just buy some proper coals and enjoy it rather than trying to use garbage just to smoke. Edited by rattler

I started laughing my ass off when I saw the title to that thread XD And yeah, I've learned my lesson about using questionable things for hookah the easy way - the way that doesn't involve lotsa pain and suffering and loss of brain cells smile.gif Edited by Allia22
