dizzing
Well, I've been coming to this site since before anybody had ever posted anything, but I've never done anything more than lurk around reading other people's ideas. The other day my friend and I were talking about making some kind of diffuser for the bottom of our hookah stem, and I got on here to read up and found 3 different threads discussing the exact same thing. Unfortunately I didn't find anything to quite suit our purposes, but I got a lot of ideas. We finally made a diffuser last night that works, I must say, spectacularly. The technology begins with a rubber bowl grommet, as I read in one of the posts already up here. Instead of using some kind of plastic lid or some such, however, we took a piece of corrugated metal (the kind you find on the back of things with big power supplies or something... just a piece of metal that is uniformly filled with small 1-2mm holes - probably about 50% holes, 50% metal) and used a pair of pliers to bend it into a cone shape with a flattened tip (it's shaped kind of like a cake decorating tip, I apologize for not having any pictures), which we then fit into the other end of the grommet. The whole thing was then secured to the stem by the wire from a pipe cleaner - we just wrapped it around the top of the grommet a few times to seal it to the stem. The smoke now fills the chamber extremely smoothly, and it tastes almost fluffier (I hesitate to make too many grand claims, because I am of course biased). It is definitely smoother and more flavorful. Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone on here for all the wonderful ideas that appear here every day, and to try and give something back to the only real hookah community I've found (there are no hookah cafes in my area - although I believe one is coming soon).
