40mm. Tried both, the bigger ones are just that much better. A little tiny bit hotter, last a little longer, though they do break apart a little bit easier than I would like, when ashing and such.

i try and break them up before there lit (with hand)

but if you accidently light them before you break em (ive donne it millions of times)
just put it on the tray below the bowl and CAREFULLY, and with PRECISION sort of give the coal a few "karate chop" like motions with scissors or a knife, normally after about three it just breaks down an even line
with that i wish you good luck it takes practice laugh.gif laugh.gif

better off just breakin em un lit haha laugh.gif Edited by art_official

omfg, I wish I would have read this earlier... I sent 1/2 a burning coal flying onto the seat of my mom's car about an hour ago. She's going to kill me...

I used 33mm for a while, recently switched to 40mm after trying my brother's. With the 33mms, if you break them up they don't last very long. I'd have to strongly disagree with art official -- a 33mm 3 kings coal WHOLE will burn for 45 minutes. Half will burn for 30 tops, and that's pushing it. Quarters are usually no good for me after 20 minutes or so, they're just too small. 40mm 3 kings give ya some nicer sized pieces -- whole they can last for over an hour. I don't have enough experience with them yet to say for sure how long they last in halves or quarters, but obviously they're bigger so it's longer than the 33mms...

Pfft. I like to get em fully lite first, for some reason it just makes more sense to me, might have to do with my half-listened to HS chem classes, I dunno why, but i do, and heres how:
if you have any set of Mya Tongs, or any tongs that just have one of those long pokey things on the end, put a coal on your tray. While bracing your tray with a hand beneath it, with the long pokey thing place the pokery part right in the center and apply pressure. Note: do not stab it or it will fly like Allia's, make contact lightly first, then apply pressure. Works every time.

33mm. If you wanna break 3 kings up without kicking up a fuss, get a knife place it vertically in the centre, and then get a spatula and hit that on the placed knife gently and voila youl have 2 symmetrical pieces of 3 kings and so forth into quarters.
