ghostofdavid
There is an entire theology system based around the idea of quoting Peace, Peace. It was essential to the Jews for various reasons throughout their history. If one is called to be a peacemaker, then one is easily reminded of their stature as one by telling each person they meet "peace." The land of Israel is wanted for such because it is believed to be a promise and a gift of God. As long as those who dwell in the land do right, so the myth goes, they will always be inhabitants of the land. How does one do right? Peace, peace. If you are interested in more, pick up the IVP Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels and it goes into detail about Shalom (i.e.) peace with both present and eschatological (after you die) definitions applying dualistically.
