cleaning hookahs

well, i got a mya acrylic hookah (the best ever IMO) from the hookah
cafe that just opened in my town, and the guy that i've been dealing
with recommended that i get a shotgun cleaning rod for cleaning the
stem..

well, i got a universal gun cleaning kit from wal-mart (was only 10
dollars) and it has several different gauge brushes, ideal for cleaning
the various diameters of shaft in the mya (the shaft is actually made
up of two longer pieces, two smaller pieces, and a main "hub" piece,
that screws into the base and has sockets for the stem and hose), and
it works wonderfully.  When I brush it out and then use a piece of
dust-free cloth that came with the kit to swab out the inside of the
stem, it makes it look brand new.  if anyone is looking for a
solution to cleaning their hookah other than the cheapo brushes that
sometimes come with them, invest 10 dollars in a gun cleaning kit (you
want a universal one that has brushes for several gauges: pistols,
rifles, AND shotguns ideally, although the 10 gauge shotgun brush is
too big for anything); you won't be disappointed.

thats actually a great idea.  you aren't using the gun cleaning chemicals though right?

I sure dont think he is using the chemicals. That would leave a God awful taste and toxic fumes while smoking.

methyl hydrate is the PERFECT cleaner for hookahs. it will disolve any
residues inside the hard to clean areas, and works excellent for
cleaning the base. dont forget to wash it out after. of course, it
should be used with brushes, and paper towel works good for cleaning
out the smaller parts. after every 10 normal cleanings (hot water and
brushes which i do after every 2 smokes), i disassemble my entire
hookah and clean every part with methyl hydrate. i usually wash out the
hoses at the same time. very clean hookah and no residual flavors or
smells.
