JesusDoesVegas
A great way to destroy a perfectly good zippo is to use it to light your quicklight coals. The black powder it drops gunks up the zippo, causing it to lose the ever so satisfying "CLING!!" sound. Ive been using the same zippo for a while to light my coals, and I just noticed today that its all gross and its lost its zippo sound. oh well. Its still classier than a bic. JesusDoesVegas
I did, but the gunkyness is in the hinge, so the sound is gone. Perhaps If I soak the outer casing in alcohol or something. I don't think that will rust it. Edited January 18, 2007 by JesusDoesVegas

I don't think charcoal has anything to do with it. The hinge doesn't cause the clank, the metal plate in the top, on the underside of the lighter does. Scheetz
I hate zippos. I have a badass Redskins one and that shit never lights when I need it. Always refilling it and it lasts about 2 days with maybe 2 full lights on it before its done.

art_official
the clank is made from metal hitting metal...not the hingeliek when you snap, the noise is coming from your middle or index finger hittng your palm, not rubbing off your thumb. if the hinge is whats bothering you im sure its nothing a little WD40 cant do anything baout

Macho555
I have this nice old silver zippo, the things about 61 years old judging by the date. It still clanks though! I use a torch lighter from walmart. the thing cost like 8 dollars and it works wonderfully.
hookah hippie
I personally use a very old butane lighter The thing of beauty about this lighter is the fact when you put recently developed butane in it The lighter becomes a good two foot flame
