Tombeik? Tombak?

Recommended Posts

Everytime I go to the local Middle Eastern market for coals, I see these bags of what look like uncut dry tobacco leaves? I was reading the 1% nicotine article and saw a little about it... how do you smoke the stuff? And how's the taste? Cause if it has a big buzz and an okay taste, I'm interested.

I'm not sure if you have to add any water to mush it up, but I do know that Tombak, Bass, Kass, Zaghoul are all very traditional types of tobacco smoked all over the middle east. It's typically unflavored, and you don't use foil over your bowl. You'd normally just place the coal directly on top of the tobacco.

Yummy huh? smile.gif

sounds like that would be your problem. i'm no expert but i've gathered that the wetness of our modern-day shisha is really where hte smoke comes from, so if that tobacco is completely dry, our heating method really wouldn't work. hence yash's solution

Depending on the type of tobacco, I think, you're supposed to wet the leaves and layer them in the bowl, then drop the coal directly on top. A completely different kind of smoking from what I understand, because the smoke is actually smoke and not vaporized glycerin like we're used to in smoking flavored tobacco.

i've tried zhagloul or i've had a bag of it, from what the smoke shop owner said was its good if you put some in a bowl add honey till it is clumpy and if you pick it up it should be really sticky. He also suggested adding a drop of lemon or mint extract. I've tried it with a screen and it wasnt all that mad its like what i would guess an all natural flavor or wood kinda flavor would be like, I say try it once in your life.

Yeah. I have...

The stuff is usually called Asfahan.. ahsfahan.... something like that.

You take the leaves.. cut off the main stem part that runs longwise and soak the leaves till they are limber.

You take them out of the water and shred them up.... you may find that you want the tobacco to dry out a bit to get going worth a darn.

You load it up and put a coal right on it... or you can rull op a cigar shaped cone and place it on the bowl seat.

Its rather harsh..... nowhere near like smokin shisha....

I have used the stuff to make some "molasses tobacco" and it turned out OK..... got a punch to it.

Most of the stuff is grown in India... but then..... I believe that most of the tobacco for used for "shisha" is grown there.
