Scheetz
Rotators pivot on the base. They are good hookahs but if you have alot of use they will begin to have issues.Modern Hookahs I would stay away from. They are cheaply made and are not that great.Egyptian and the Sheik are pretty much the same thing. Just have height differences and the sheik will come with hose covers. Both are good choices. If you are looking for something small check out the Mya Saray QT. They sell them at MNhookahs.com .

cypherkk
i recommend a egyptian for a starter hookah. They seem generally to be better hookahs. At least from theowners of hookahbars. I have a bohemian (my first) and a modern. The bohemian is smaller and so far actually seems to smoke better.

ghostofdavid
Go big, or go home!Get one at least 20-something inches. Get a smaller one later when you want to lug it around different places.
Lakemonster
I will chime in that a first pipe should be a traditional hookah (egyptian or syrian)I would keep your search limited to simple traditional hookahs of medium height (22-28 inches). I suggest single hose with purge valve. I would not get interested in hookahs with bells and whistles at this point. Personally I would avoid messing with anything finicky like auto-seal systems and hookahs where the stem unscrews into multiple pieces. I never encourage people to buy Chinese hookahs.... there are some good ones out there... but the market is saturated with inferior product... and the untrained eye will have a very hard time telling the difference.By keeping your first hookah in the realm of simplicity will help guarantee that you will enjoy your first hookah long after you have added to your collection. A personal suggestion would be to call the prospective company you plan to buy from and negotiate a deal for your hookah to come with a Mya Saray washable hose... it may be a few dollars more... but well worth the money. It'll keep you in the game much longer than some of the sketchy hoses I have seen and used over the last few years.

Apollo
Everyone on the forum here seems to dislike rotators, but i love them, i have 4 friends with them and i just got one recently, and i love them, they are great for group smokeing and after about 2 years all of them still work great. A week ago I agreed to buy a 34" 4 hose hookah (I ordered mine from a different website whose name I won't divulge yet) and split the cost 3 ways with my dorm mates. It came out to about 40 dollars per person. I am also a beginner and let me tell you...34" is too big and buying it as cheap as possible will make you very disappointed. I know I am comparing two different websites and all but they are both from egypt and prob the same manufacturers. The other circumstances just seem too coincidental. My vase was cracked, stem had rust, rattled, one hose didn't work, whole hookah measured 6" less than 34" advertised. I would still recommend getting a hookah because I also wanted to go all out on my first hookah and rushed into the decision. I would research a bit more and probably buy from a more reputable company, I hear good things about mnhookah.com (high prices prob. mean better quality) and I just received a phunnel bowl from them and was pretty pleased with it. I hate to be pessimistic but I just received my 34" 4 hose literally yesterday and we were all kind of pissed off. I would even better recommend NOT buying online. Try to find a place where you can see the product before you buy it otherwise you might be disappointed and return shipping is non-refundable. I am still waiting to hear from the website I ordered from so I will keep you posted.
Guest
I also agree with lakemonster, start off smaller hookah and go for good quality hoses like mya saray washable. One of my cobra hoses did not work.
