aquavita
Hey everyone! I was wondering exactly how you can acheive the smoothest smoke. Currently I use alwaha and starbuzz and some people complain that the smoke is too harsh. I've tried different hole patterns, water levels in the base, etc. Here in Dallas there's a place called the Velvet Hookah that has the smoothest hookah smoke, but they don't tell you what's in it! I guess I'm just hoping someone might be able to help out. I use the basic quicklights.
ASUSEAN1
put some ice in the base and work on your heat management. If it is to harsh try using less coals. Maybe 1.5 coals instead of two Edited February 6, 2007 by ASUSEAN1

enfer singe
These are just some suggestions that you may have heard or tried already but putting ice in the base usually helps with cooling the air and gives a smoother smoke. Also I would try putting the shisha loosely in the bowl and a bit below the top so it isn't too close to the coals and doesn't get too hot. If you cover it with foil blow through the bottom of the bowl after you have poked holes in the foil to put some air between the shisha, this way there is lots of air flow around the shisha and it shouldn't get too hot. What kind of quicklites are you using? Sometimes it can be the coals if they aren't good quality or you are using too many.
486underground
Well I always use the coldest tap water I can. But if Starbuzz is harsh then you may have to much heat on it. What kind of coals are you using and how many. If you are using 3kings try just using 1 coal. For a foil pattern try making 3 circles, one on the outside, one in the mid and a small one towards the middle then make a + in the center of the small one. you can also make a + with a fork through the whole thing. Take the fork and make a row from 1 end to the other down the middle. Then cross it with another row and see how that works. I hope one of these will help you out. Pieces
As was said, it's prolly heat management. There's a good few of us in the Dallas area that I'm sure you could hook up with for a session and possibly learn some tips. I'm actually in Euless, and travel to Dallas a fair bit. PM me if you want to meet up sometime.
glz88
What usually works for me is filling the bottom of my bowl with about half inch of ice then pouring cold water on top. Keeps my hookah nice and cold for most of the smoke session.

I've heard those help.
cymptom
Using a wind cover will apply more heat to the tobacco -- if your smoke is already harsh, that will only make it harsher. If you're experiencing harshness with Starbuzz, I'd say either you have too much tobacco touching the foil or you're using too much coal. What kind of quicklights do you use? Are you placing the coal directly in the middle of the bowl? If so, try moving it more towards the edge of the bowl and see if you can reduce harshness that way. A general rule is that the closer the coal is to the center of the foil, the more heat you're appling to the tobacco.
shisha fan
adding cold fruit juice to the base also smoothens the smoke out, but don`t use a brand that has alot of pulp in it because otherwise it will be a nightmare to clean your pipe. You don't want all of the heat in the same spot for too long otherwise the shisha will burn. Try moving the coal every 20-30 minutes or so to the opposite side of the bowl
