New To The Group, Question About Smoke Detectors

hey guys i am about to buy my first hookah and since it is 20 degrees outside, there is no chance of smoking outdoors for awhile. Any tips on covering smoke alarms or boxing the room? My RA smells smoke from a mile away.

turn on a ventilation system (ac unit, even though it is already cold out). fire alarm shouldnt go off with one hookah, i never cover my smoke detector. If your window opens then a nice box fan and jus blow into that. or blow the smoke into a bottle with a little slit about half way through and about 1/4 full of water and shake it up and the smoke disappears. oh and put a wet towel in front of your door Edited February 15, 2007 by ASUSEAN1

Towel under your door, ziploc bag over the smoke detector, floor fan blowing towards and open window. When you exhale the smoke just blow into the back of the fan so it goes right out the window. You may need to crank on your heat if its that cold out with the window partially open. But its a door, your not paying electricity. If you have a study built on to your room like my college dorm was then put a towel under that door also, so it has 2 blocked doors.

I also suggest becoming friends with your RAs on your floor. It pays off in a lot of ways. I thought my RA was a tool since thats what everyone had told me. Never gave him a chance until the second month of school when I started talking to him. He was cool as shit, would jump in Halo 2 sessions with us, didnt care my paintball stuff was in my dorm (gun is a No No) and sure as hell didnt care about my hookah. I asked him about it and he said we cant have them, but he didnt care. I actually had him smoke with us 1 time. I still blocked off the door and what not because other floor RAs would come through every once in a while. Its also nice when girls have to be out after 2 AM and he could care less if they stayed with us. He was a dick to other people about it though.

Here's what I do (and I live RIGHT across the hall from the RA):
1) Take a blanket and cover the entire door. Towels underneath don't do anything..There are other cracks in the door that let air through.
2) Smoke

Works like a charm, never been questioned (and I'm at one of the most strict schools I've ever heard of! ugh)

Edit: And from what I can tell, smoke detectors don't detect hookah smoke. I smoke in my room all the time without covering it, and when I'm at home, I smoke in my room too, and still nothing from the detectors. Edited February 16, 2007 by Hookah_Bob3

Depends on the school duder...

My school, the doors were sealed all around the edges, sans a 1/2" gap on the bottom of the door.

As for smoke detectors, theres more than one kind out there, and newer ones are getting tricky. There are kinds that detect smoke, and some that detect heat. And some of the newer ones won't even let you cover them up, as it blocks the sensor on them making them go off...But yes generally speaking hookah smoke isn't the same as traditional smoke. Hookah smoke is much cooler unlike smoke from a fire, or even ciggs for that matter and won't trip most generic alarms.

turn the smoke detector off, it should have a battery in it as a backup power source, just take that out, then twist the main houseing and it will hang from the ceiling, just unplug the power wire from it and put it all back together. I did that in my dorm when i was in college and so did my friends, no one found out

Careful. People at my school who try that find an inquisitive res-life person in their rooms the next day - the smoke detectors alert some kind of central place when they've been tampered-with.

search online how to disable a smoke detector, my brother did it for our smoking room a long time ago. We just make sure a window or two is left open for proper ventilation (one on each side, this makes a nice cross breeze. )

1. Open window and have fan blowing out. Blow smoke towards fan.
2. Towel under door. If it's not enough, soak the towel in water. Gets a little disgusting, but whatever.
3. CD 50pk cake box covers work really well and usually fit real nice and snug over most detectors. Great idea!

I usually don't have problems with hookah smoke and detectors. However, coals set them off easily when you're lighting them so watch out.

the only time i ever had a smoke alarm go off was when i was lighting a quick light coal and it burned my carpet when it crackled and i didn't notice it ! (my fiancee was sooooo mad at me! it burnt a nice indent in the carpet but i guess that's why they make area rugs (yikes!) but other than that, i just turn on my ceiling fan and open a window if i'm worried that my fiancee will complain about the coal smell.

As for the hookah staying lit and setting off a smoke alarm, if the shisha is burning wrong it might, but other than that i've never had a problem and i've been smoking mine for years!
