zophar
Yo So i've been trying to smoke some, everytime i pack a decent bowl and am 10 minutes into the session i get a harsh taste, lift up the foil to see that the tobacco is sticking to the foil, cant pack a decent size bowl without this happening i have a charcoal tray too, any suggestions? Reapermanx
pack the bowl poke the holes then put your hand over the foil and blow into the bowl from the bottom and lift your hand up and blow for a little bit. That helped me at least.
tobbsman
That is the worst which can happen, if the tobacco sticks to the foil! * just put less tobacco in the bowl and leave about 7mm of space between foil and tobacco (less=more). * You can also make the holes in the foil before you put it on the bowl, then the foil doesn't pull towards the inside of the bowl (and way touch some tobacco) when you make the holes. * Take two or three layers of foil (if you use very wet tobacco like Fakher, Amir, Layalina, Abu Haitham). *If you use quick light coals, break them in 2 halfs (before you light them ). Put them in opposite of each other near the edge of the bowl and rotate them slowly each 5 minutes. success, tobbsman
King Mo
yep, you are overfilling the bowl. underfilling it may seem like it wont do the trick, but it is the best way. the smoke lasts longer, burns better, and you have a greater threshold for putting more coals. you can start with 2 coals, because the gap will make it harder to get started, then take one off if it becomes a little harsh. leave a gap, and make the foil tight. If the foil does not touch the tobacco, then the tobacco wont stick to it. (obvious isn't it )
premier87
does it matter at all whether you put the shiny or dull side of the foil down?
King Mo
apparantly it should be shiny side down, but from practical experience, I have found there to be no difference at all.
cypress
Supposedly you dont want the shiny side up. The direct heat of the coal on the shiny side which is coated will react kinda funny. This is what I have read but I havent tried it with the shiny side up.
NERV
it also depnds on how you do it, when i first started smokign i would press the foil down onto the tobacco, never had a problem for over a year, then all of a sudden one day it was burning left and right so i started not pressing the foil
HookahCulture
Check out my patented foil hole pattern for the perfect smoke! But yeah, leave some space between the ma'asell and the foil, maybe more than usual because sometimes the foil sags into the bowl.
mushrat
The easiest answer seems to have been the best for my shisha on the foil problem, I just used less and made sure the foil was taught before adding the coal. Does anyone bother with the stamped metal screens I see for sale?
cypress
I have tried it once but did not like it. It does not seal like the foil and the holes let too much heat in.
HookahCulture
I have decent results with the screen, but you need to watch your coal amount. Too much coal and yes it will burn, too little and you're sucking air. Two quick-lights are good to start, keep a third unlit one handy and add it when the first two are a half-done. When you're using the metal screen, don't fold the flaps under the bowl, just let them hang straight down and leave the longest tab sticking straight out so you can lift it off easily. WHY? Because when those coals are half done, you take them off and into the tray, lift the screen and do a HOOKIE FLIP. Jeez I hate that term already. Anyway, you're flipping the ma'asell with the tongs to expose the fresh layer, tamp down a little for clearance, replace the screen, put the coals back on. With the coal now, you want to imagine a Mickey Mouse because you're putting the two smaller ones down first near the edge of the screen then lean the big one against the two (but not flatly down.) So now you have a complete use of the ma'asell and getting a fresh blast of flavor to round out the bowl with. I repost this fun fact every so often.......
