imagelessdude
So I finally had an MYA hose go bad. It's one I don't use regularly... and last time I tried it... I breathed in a buncha crap.. So I run water through it and... ORANGE WATER. On top of that, it had a leak... so I thought I'd explore this hose before trashing it. Be prepared to be disgusted. So, we have a normal looking MYA hose:Hm. [I shortened it LOL]Now, I take off the tips:Ah. That was tricky.Next... I'm gonna remove the 'leather' cover. Is that orange rubber? Plastic? Well... let's look...This is the inner hose:Umm...So lets keep cutting...Yeah.. thats rust. Ew...I'm pretty disappointed with this. A 'washable' hose?I'll admit, it held up okay... 1 year and a half of not too often use [this is the 'guests' hose]But still. This sucks. Wanna see what we inhale when we have a dying hose?Rust:Questions? Comments? Concerns?
imagelessdude
PS: I put masking tape on the end.. makes for a super-tight, grommet-less seal on the MYA. Convenient.
Scheetz
weird. I took mine home with me and knocked it on my leg. When I went to smoke I inhaled crap into my mouth. Cleaned the hose works great now, but took me about 10 minutes to get clear water again. Thought it was funny though, I didnt think about what I did when I was banging it on my leg waiting for my coal to heat up.So is the metal ring on the inside, or is it in the middle of 2 layers?? ASUSEAN1
the metal ring is in the inside with the clear plastic (well suppose to be clear) around that and the leather goes around that
lilbrownindian
hmm, only if they can get the plastic inside of the coils

WhitzEnd
kinda makes me wanna turn my own hose handles on a lathe and use clear vinyl tubing with a nice hose cover over it...

imagelessdude
I'm making the handles into a plastic clear hose.
ghostofdavid
. . .Wow, thanks for the detailed pictures and info. I might cut open one of hoses that I got with my QT in June or so and see how it looks. Man, that is kind of gross.I have a vinyl tube that I have never used. I might stick with that. If I can figure out how to make it fit into the hose port.
web250
Last time I smoked my Mya hose I breathed in some black crap. Had to physically cough it out of my lungs, and blow it from the hose.
cymptom
I got the black crap too. A full mouthful of it. I cleaned the hose thoroughly with lemon juice and water several times, and black crap STILL comes out of it. Whatever...So these hoses have a plastic liner in them? So much for the health concerns people had about plastic in homemade hoses...
benmandude
That is quite scary. Smoking tobacco is bad enough for your health, but smoking rust is even worse. I don't know what that does to your lungs, but I assume it is not good.
Zerodynamic
It IS possible to use clear plastic hose.Looking at the two wooden endpieces on the hose we see that there is some sort of "stem." Find some flexible vinyl tubing that's that size or a little larger, pop the in, and use some screw down hose clamps. That should work.
Johnny_D
Begs a question :-How do we *know* that MYA hoses are washable? What is the definition of washable? Is the above hose a kosher MYA?Have MYA ever confirmed that their hoses are indeed washable and if they are... how can they substatiate that claim?Demanding minds demand to know!JD
imagelessdude
Yeah it's a kosher MYA hose, got it in its MYA baggie from the local MYA dealer. Hm. Scary eh? Ill post pics of my plastic hose when I make it later this week. Oh and David.. if youre gonna cut it open, use pliars... or youll wreck whatever you use to try to cut it with. hookaheveryday
The scary thing is that my hoses could look like that underneath and I would be none the wiser. Why isnt another metal used like aluminum?
hmpitags2006
aluminum is not very corrosion resistant unless it is anodized.

Akkbar
I really dont know why people wash their hoses.I have never washed any of my hoses (except for leaving the tip in a cup of vodka every so often), and they are all fine... no odors or flavours of chunks or anything, and I have 'washable' and non-washable hoses.I will continue to not wash my hose.I will, however, throw them out after I feel they aren't smoking as well as they could be.
