Canadian tobacco import tax

Recommended Posts

I have seen some conflicting information on tobacco import tax. On
HookahHub, import tax for BC is .18 cents/gram and $180/kilo. The
problem is 1000grams X 0.18cents doesn't equal $180, it equals $1.80.
Also, what is the tobacco import tax for Saskatchewan?

If some of my Canadian bretheren could help me with my predicament I would be thankful.

Hey Stew,

Tobacco duties and taxes for Sask. are: 7% of value
for GST + 17.5 cents per gram + brokerage fee from Canada Post
($7.)  +brokerage fee from courier service (which varies with the
worth of the goods)

You might want to check your math on the
import duties befor ordering.  Your calculator may need new
batteries...18 cents per gram equals
0.18 dollars multiplied by 1000 which equals $180 per kilo...But you
lucked out in Sask, it's only $175 per kilo.

If you have any friends or family out east, (PEI,
NS, NFLD, except NB) then you can get them to import for you.  All
three provinces do not have tobacco import duties that I can find, and
PEI doesn't even charge taxes.

follow the Canadian Customs resources links from the hookahhub delivery rates section for more info.

Or you could save yourself a lot of stress and just order from
smoking-hookah.com or hookah-shisha.com since they seem to be able to
dodge customs.

good luck

There's no "dodging" customs by any hookah company; it's just less likely to be charged when you ship using Post (USPS / Canada Post) then it is with a courier (FedEx / UPS).  FedEx/UPS will always charge you 100% of the time for 100% of the fees; some times with post you can get away with it.

I just talked to Jason at hookahhub through their live chat feature (which I was very impressed by...I literally had my question answered via Instant Messaging through their website within 1 minute) and apparently if your order is under $20 which is the limit for customs there's a good chance you can avoid paying duty alltogether, especially if you order through USPS instead of UPS....so I think I will order tobacco for less than $20 (before shipping) and see what happens (I wouldn't want to risk paying a ton of duties by ordering a lot anywas since that doesn't agree with my poor student budget....) I'll let eveeryone knows whether I can get around paying duties with hookahhub since in that case they'd definitely be the best company for Canadians to order from...

far be it for me to criticize math skills, but .18 x 1kg ($0.18x1000g) = $180...

18 cents a gram, for ten grams, would be $1.80.... 18 cents times ten is that amount :)

and a kilogram is defined as 1000 grams...

Don't want to get into an argument, just don't want you to pay ten times more duty than you think...

Go to the page you linked: www.hookahhub.com/Delivery-Rates-sp-66.html

click the link for "Non-Commercial Provincial Tax Collection Programs"

You will be redirected to the Canada Customs site and a chart outlining fees for each province.

The import tax for BC in 17.9 cents per gram, $179 dollars per kilo

For Sask it is 17.5 cents per gram * 1000 grams = $175 per kilo

17.5 cents per gram = 0.175 dollars per gram
0.175 dollars per gram * 1000 grams = $175 dollars per kilo

Like I said at the begining, this is not criticism or flaming, just trying to help

Oh and if there is a decimal before the 18 in 18 cents per gram on the
Hookahhub site then it is a typo... the prices are full cents per gram,
not fractions of one cent per gram.

peace
