VDDZ
So I put ice in the hookah like normal, but befor adding the water, I put a couple table spoons of salt into the base, without telling my friend. I came to it without any bias (well, as much as humanly possable) and my friend, obviously, had no idea. We smoked colder than normal hookah with no extra taste. My friend had no idea until I told him. After smoking a couple of times like this, I have noticed that the smoke feels much "heavier" in the lungs. I'm gonna try it with out the salt soon, to make sure it's not the new tabacco. If your into cold cold cold hookah, I highly suggest this, it makes a difference and I have not tasted a difference. Plus I have noticed it keeps the hooka cleaner!
JamminJonah
Any higher risk of rust in the hoses or or other metal parts with salt water? I'm just curious because I love a cold hookah and if you can make it colder with salt than I'm all for it!
cypherkk
can't imagine it doing any good unless you almost froze the salt waterin the fridge. After that, it will cool just as quick as normal water. Ice is the best bet as far as I can tell.Salt simply raises the freezing point.
fewwdragon
by adding salt doesn't that actually melt the ice?
benmandude
Salt actually lowers the freezing point, thus making the ice melt.http://antoine.frostburg.edu/chem/senese/1...melts-ice.shtml
Zerodynamic
Yeah, I was wondering why they salted the roads in winter time?
DizzyGuy
Have fun untill you mess up one time and shatter your base
Scheetz
QUOTE (Zerodynamic @ Feb 21 2007, 12:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Yeah, I was wondering why they salted the roads in winter time? its not all salt on the roads. Its a chemical compound that actually heats up and melts the snow/ice. It will burn the hell out of you if you hold a handful of it when it reacts. Fun times in chemistry labs. There is salt in the mix, along with sand. I just dont recommend picking it up and trying to use the salt for anything. You may not get lucky. What I do is fill my Vase and stick it in the freezer. Then I stick my stem in the freezer also so its nicely chilled when it comes out. This gives a great first few minutes of smoking till it all warms back up. [LB]
you might as well put antifreeze in your base
VDDZ
I don't know about the rust thing, but I was told my hose is made of stainless steel and so is my main hookah, however, the vase broke, so I'm using the brass backup. I have noticed more green build up on the blow valve, but I don't remember the last time I cleaned that thing...Antifreeze? A thick, toxic liquid used to dissipate heat? I want to hold the cold, not get rid of it. Plus THAT would prolly taste nasty. /sarcasm Don't be a dick, it was an idea, and I feel it helped keep the water colder, if you don't like it, don't do it, but some people here sound interested, and it would be nice to see some un-bias [or even bias] opinions. djbomberto
the anti-freeze comment was a joke lol. I just go to walmart and get portable ice cubes (their like small tubes) that freeze in your freezer and you put that in your base and just add some cubes. Then you will be fine. rcusick
http://science.howstuffworks.com/question58.htm"Ice forms when the temperature of water reaches 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius). When you add salt, that temperature drops: A 10-percent salt solution freezes at 20 F (-6 C), and a 20-percent solution freezes at 2 F (-16 C). On a roadway, this means that if you sprinkle salt on the ice, you can melt it. The salt dissolves into the liquid water in the ice and lowers its freezing point""A 10-percent salt solution freezes at 20 F (-6 C), and a 20-percent solution freezes at 2 F (-16 C)""When you add salt to the ice water, you lower the melting temperature of the ice down to 0 F or so."Summery: By adding salt to the ice it 'melts' the ice by lowering the freezing temperature, this causes the temperature of the solution to drop, hence the colder effect on the smokegot to love a little science!
