jordanneff
So yes, I know that we here at the forums have a lovely section for all kinds of reviews and such but this morning an awesome idea came to me. I want to design a hookah and shisha review site - solely for reviews to help people out who might be interested in a certain hookah, shisha, and accessories and such. I do like how here on the forums anyone can review things, but - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this - it's a tad unorganized, and everyones review methods are different, so finding a solid review for something isn't always easy.My plan is to make a site where everyone can sign up, review things, and have everything be reviewed by certain things. Like say someone was going to review Al Waha Strawberry shisha, they'd go to the shisha section, then the al waha brand, click on strawberry and click add review, and when they reviewed it they would be options for ratings on specifics like flavor, smoke, duration, overall, etc, and then there'd be a box for someone to add extra comments about it. Then when multiple users submit reviews for the same product, it'd combine the two and take the average and that'd be it... but I also have a plan so if someone rated something real low that if another person rated it good and more people thought it really was good but didn't feel like reviewing it they could just rate that review up or down (sorta like how urbandictionary has that thumbs up/thumbs down thing on their definitions). Also, for products I might consider having links to places where to buy it, and/or the site with the best deal so if someone likes a review enough they wanna buy the product they can go right to the site which will save them the most money (which might also influence some sites to have cheaper prices )But I have this great plan for this site, and I have the knowledge and skills I require to make it happen, but before I go ahead and get myself into it I'd like to see what all of you think. Such as, would you use a site like this? Do you think it would help people? Do you like the idea of the site? etc...I already googled and couldnt find a site soley dedicated to hookah, shisha, and accessory reviews, just mostly hookah sites that had a small section for reviews. But anyhow, let me know what you think because I really would enjoy making this site and helping people out.
AKammenzind
Yeah man, I've been wondering myself why it's so unorganized here Don't get me wrong this forum and the people on it are awesome, but it would make much more sense to have an organized way to review things, or to find a review of a specific product without having to spend 20 minutes searching through posts to get the information you're after. mushrat
been tried, been done, been gone.... But heck, the 8th time may be the charm.....No kidding guys..you are welcome to try, but over the years there have been several honest attempts, and none of them have been worth the effort for the guy who put it together and they each soon went away....the sites, the people often stayed around.I'll see if i can dig up some links later for you... ghostofdavid
That sounds like a fine idea until you realize cronies from specific groups (cough, hookah hookah, cough) will flood your site with illegitimate reviews and recommendations for gross tobaccos. I think it is a good idea but people don't follow the review process... what makes you think they will at another site?
jordanneff
Well, no harm in trying. I've made quite a few sites that either had large competitors or just didn't seem feasible at first but actually did well so who knows. I'll give it a couple days before I decide to go for it or not
mushrat
here you go...I know there were some others but I can't find them quickly. I think it is a good idea but people don't follow the review process... what makes you think they will at another site?Well, people will be forced to rate certain things on a number system, and if I notice someone rating everything solid 10's or solid 0's etc I'll just delete their reviews and ban the IP. Simple as that.
AKammenzind
You could also just delete posts of anyone that isn't well known on the forums if they seem a bit too positive, that'd help prevent websites just giving fake reviews to make business. ghostofdavid
I am all about forgiveness. In fact, my worldview and life depends on it. But you know what they say, fool me once, shame on you... create 10 fake accounts and spoof your address... a pox upon your household!!!
jordanneff
Okay, so I couldn't resist at least dabbling in photoshop a bit because deep down I want to make this thing happen, so this is a very unfinished version of the template I was working on. I got a bit of the idea from the forums here (for color) because it helps the site to be more neutral, but I had to add some color besides the blue-gray though to spice it up.Without further adue... http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/1835/layoutcolorsnp0.jpgHope you like it so far... and the name that I whipped up, though nothing is final obviously. It's just a mock up so far of what I want it to look like.
web250
It'd be hard to do, it's not just a "design it and do it" issue. You'd need a very good database-centered (probably custom) back end to initiate a good reviewing system. It can't just be e-mail submitted text. That's too low tech to succeed. If you're gonna do it, you gotta go Web 2.0.
JoeLipinski
as you can see I made one of the sites and I would be more than happy to give you my list (I have them in a database) of all of the manufactures and flavors. I have about 110 different flavors, and about 20 brands. I would be happy to go to the site and submit my reviews. If you need any help, I am also here to help. I was actually going to start collecting all that data myself haha, but yeah, hopefully with support by the forum community this one wont be a flop As for the reviews, anyone and everyone is welcome to help submit them once I (start, and then) finish the coding for it. cypherkk
if you can compile a database like web250 suggested that coalates users entries and averages them to give a brand overview and then let customers see individual users reviews... I think that might be something.

Oh no, I wouldn't go take someone's reviews like that. Basically I just plan on having people be able to sign up and such and post thiers, so if someone wants to take their reviews from here they should be able to pretty easily, just copy and paste.QUOTE (cypherkk @ Mar 7 2007, 11:50 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>if you can compile a database like web250 suggested that coalates users entries and averages them to give a brand overview and then let customers see individual users reviews... I've been designing websites for 7 years and have a friend who has extensive php and database knowledge so I'm good to go on the technical side Edited March 7, 2007 by jordanneff
