Am I Doing This Right?

ok this is how i set up my hookahs, id just like to know if theres anything im doing wrong or if you guys do things differently

-fill up water 1 inch above the thing that sticks in (lol)
-lightly fluff the shisha (dont pack it in tight) right below the foil
-stretch the foil tight around the bowl
-poke small holes (thumbtack) randomly. alot of holes
-heat up 2 or 3 japanese style coals and arrange them evenly around the outsides of the bowl
-smoke.

this is what i was taught when i first started, is everything ok?

also what is the mod that people keep talking about in the phunnel bowls? i did a search on google and forums and i didnt find anything except search youtube and i did that and still nothing. Edited March 10, 2007 by teox

From what I have also been told and have read. Yes you sound like you are doing it properly. I sprinkle the tobacco into the bowl and lightly pack it down but not too hard cuz it needs air space. I make sure there is a fair amount of it in the bowl.

For the water I just take a pitcher and pour water in till it looks around an inch past the stem piece just enough to be around an inch. Sometimes it is a bit less but it still seems to work for me..also sometimes it is a bit more but I would rather use less than more because I don't want water in my hose.

For the coals I use 2 quick-lights the golden kind but now I have Al Ajdad natural coals so I am going to use one piece and break into a few chunks and place 2 pieces on top of the screen. I have metal screens so I use those. I have yet to try foil. Tried foil once 2 years ago and had used wine in the base so it was fruity. I barely felt like I was smoking at all that time. Just tasted like fruity air and was very smooth.

But yeah you are on the right track as your method goes. There may be ways to improve it but that is pretty much the way I do it. As long as it works and you are getting good clouds it is all good. I get massive amounts of smoke that literally float and drift in the air and I can reach out and grab it. It's fun. Well I cant grab it but I can move it with my hands. Sounds good to me. But every setup can be unique in certain ways. Try that out, see how it smokes.
