Mayday
I use quick light, and was wondering the same thing. I usually just snap it in two (but my fingers get ashy, annoying.) How do you guys break apart your quicklight coals?

cymptom
It really is better to cut them before you light them. What I do is make a light perforation with a pocket knife saw and just snap it in half. Takes 3 seconds and it breaks perfectly every time. It's also better than having a burned shirt, blanket, and having the coals fall ontop on speakers and other things while they are lit. Not to mention.. having a fire start.. lol..not that I should know anything about that.. Remember what Allia22 Said. No naturals for me lol. I think I am getting better with them though. Instead of taking them off when I am finished the session I just keep them on till a few hours later so they are completely out. Then I take them off and ash them and that's it. I then dissemble everything. It is safer that way. Quicklights I just take them off when I'm done and throw them under water. PhatBeezie
What I do is let them light , flip it over upside down and then put my tongs across the top (bottom) and them press down evenly and it ussually breaks in 2 or 3 peices.
GordonMac
the best and easiest way is to just break them into 4ths with your mits. its not hard at all. This has nothing to do with your post but get natural coals!! I love them so much. Once you go natural you never go back... unless you get lazy like me sometimes. juice
I cut mine with a butter knife before I light them. I wonder though, if you break them while they're on your foil, won't some ash or powder fall through to your tobacco? Does that even matter? Allia22
Doesn't matter in the least, IMO.
Johnny_D
I wouldn't use a butter knife...When I use 3-kings I tend to go for the sharpest, serated (knobbly), steak knife i can find.Insert the sharp tip into the very middle of the 3-king, then gentle, slice downwards and backwards Whilst pushing the tip into the coal.9 times out of 10 I will get a decent 1/2 coal. Try it!DISCLAIMER : If you cut your fingers off don't come a-crying!JD
BravoKilo
Can't say I've tried it yet, but what about using a small hand saw blade (i.e. coping saw/hack saw/etc..) to cut it in pieces?? Home Depot/Lowes typically have all sorts of mini saws for drywall/sheetrock, and I'm guessing one would make quick work of a coal Edited March 16, 2007 by BravoKilo
