Mayday
I just saw this on the frontpage of yahoo newshttp://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070315/hl_nm/...t_who_shisha_dcMy friend told me that it's about equivilent to smoking a single cig, not a whole pack. Is this news to anyone else, or am I alone? Makes me think of not smoking anymore.
djbomberto
WOW"A regular user of waterpipe...smokes 2-3 sessions per day. This translates into intake of nicotine equivalent to more than one pack of cigarettes per session for most waterpipe smokers," the study said. DrunkenWizard
I consider myself to be a regular waterpipe smoker and I smoke 2-3 sessions per week, not per day. I'm not sure that is a very good study.

cymptom
Of course it all depends on what kind of tobacco you smoke and how you smoke it -- and even then, the nicotine content in the plant is still subject to much variation.
disturbedguru
Interesting...but the study took place in egypt and of course smoking 2-3 times a day is going to have harmful effects...kind of like smoking a pack of cigarettes have a harmful effect....Just smoke it in moderation if your going to smoke at all. cymptom
These studies are kinda useless... the nicotine intake from hookah smoking should be the least of health concerns. I want to see more research about charcoal, heavy metal content in the smoke and the effects of these components.

aronparsons
One has to consider the fact that the study was done in Egypt; it is probable the study was done on traditional styles of tobacco (e.g. zaghoul), in which the amount of nicotine is very high. Unless we have access to the data, we can't argue over their claims.
staygone
The nicotine intake of a whole pack of cigarettes? I'm surprised that everybody isn't smoking hookah 24/7, we'd all be addicted as bats to nicotine. Jesus. I wish there were some legit reports, I think MAYO should make one.-QM
Whodat1004
I am seriously getting tired of seeing bullshit information like this. I think our society will likely accept this findings as truth too without analyzing the source. Its an uphill battle. Damn the media!
MR Bubble
I'll argue over their claims by common sense. When's the last time you smoked a pack of cigarettes in 1 hour? well, you probably couldn't. And even if you did, or gave it the old college try (like cool hand Luke going for the 50 boiled eggs in an hour) you would probably wake up to find yourself dead. Remember, nicotine is a poison, and the other crap in cigarettes can be found in rat poison, cyanide and a whole host of other crap. If you didn't find yourself dead (or someone else find you dead) you would probably puke your socks up on the 10th cigarette. I'm a 30 year cigarette smoker and will admit that I couldn't handle the nicotine of a pack in one hour. I'll smoke a standard Egyptian bowl of Nakhla and want a cigarette afterward. Their story is BS. We all know how "spin" works. It's possible they had it hooked up to a machine that drew a constant flow of smoke from a larger than normal bowl and simplified their findings for dramatics. When the words come out, it comes as a bowl of shisha is equal to a pack of smokes. Wow, what a find for the media to grab hold of. Remember: Good stuff doesn't sell. "Give us dirty laundry."But remember that smoking ANYTHING is a bad idea.MR Bubble

AKammenzind
Eh, fuck nicotine. If you smoke you just have to accept that you're probly going to shorten your life, or at least your lung capacity. Just like the media trying to turn people away from choice and free thought...I'm gonna enjoy my smoke now, before that's illegal too.

newsman
Here's my own unscientific observation about this: When I first tried shisha in Egypt, I had not smoked cigs for about six months. When I hit the hookah, I expected the usual nicotine head rush. It didn't happen. I brought a pipe home and smoked a bowl a day and never thought about having a cig or feeling the need to smoke the entire rest of the day. After about two months of this, I decided to try an american cig (a Newport). I lit it up on my way to work in the car. I got so dizzy I almost had to pull over. By the end of the week I was back to about a pack a day. It makes you wonder how much crap they put into those things...
mgcsinc
That article was ridiculous for two reasons: - It clearly monopolized on the recent trend of hookah smoking in this country to make the study relevant to us, despite the fact that waterpipe smoking in Egypt and other countries where it is a traditional practice is completely different. Don't be hasty in rejecting the 2-3 times a day thing - it is common in some countries, but it clearly has nothing to do with the average hookah smoker in this country. - It pretended as if nicotine was a primary health concern. It is not.

Nicotine just creates the addiction, its the tobacco that is part of the culprit. And trust me, if smoking 2 bowls a day causes an addiction because said nicotine is higher than 1 pack of cigs, well I would not be able to walk away from my hookah for a few weeks with out going through the symptoms of a smoker on cold turkey.
