Coal burning Aluminum Foil

Recommended Posts

While I was smoking the peach today, I notived that when I didn't move the coal for a while, the aluminum foil turned whitish under the coal...is that actually a sign that the aluminum foil was burning since I heard that inhling aluminum fumes is not that rgeat healthwise and also would burning aluminum impact the flavour? And most importantly, why would it happen? In the months that I've had my hookah now it has never happened before....

Was the shiny side down? The foil should not be burning as the temp is
not hot enough. The white stuff could be some sort of oxidation as
aluminum does oxidize and the color of that is white.

I was using golden coals and some no-name brand aluminum foil....on second thought though I think you might be right cypress and I may have been so eager to get smoking that I put the wrong side up since I have always used this foil and the same coal and it has never happened before....plus I'm a bit scatterbrained with too many exam studying facts crammed in my head right now so I tend to do stupid things like that It was also fairly windy and I was smoking on my deck so that obviously made the coals hotter then they usually are though I hgave smoked in windy conditions before....I think it was probably the wrong side being up....thanks

Hmmm... interesting topic!

I have this sort of thing happen all the time and I guess I never
thought twice about it. For me it always happens when I leave the coal
sitting on the foil in one place for a long period of time (10 minutes
or so). When I move the coal away from where it was sitting there is an
off white spot about a little smaller than the coal itself on the foil.

Ive never noticed any kind of strange taste or
increased/decreased buzz when this happens so I never thought too much
about it. My best guess is that when the foil comes to a certain
temperature from the constant heat of the coal it begins to oxidize.

On a side note, when I use foil I always make sure the shiney side is facing down to reduce the risk of burning the massell

Now I'm curious about this aluminum foil thing. I mean theres a lot of aluminum pots in the kitchen utilizing direct heat when cooking. Also Aluminum foil used when grilling.
I haven't found anything definitive about this issue. Moreover, is the aluminum foil sold for the hookah really that different from household foil? Is there some sort of standard that the hookah sellers like Nour require on the foils they sell?
I don't know. Could it be were getting too concerned about something that we should'nt be worried of? Anyways smoking a hookah isn't really good for you to begin with .
Maybe we should just chill, pack the bowl, use foil or a screen and smoke away!
