Will A Mya Stem...

Recommended Posts

The title pretty much sums it up. With the spring coming and my intrest in hookahs rekindled I've decided I want a new hookah to smoke outdoors.

However I have some special custom ideas in mind for this hookah that requires me to use a MYA stem. Basicly, I'm wedded to the design of the H-S Egyptian vases and I also want to keep the size down on this hookah (below 24") but I also want the ability to put a ice chiller on it. I was just going to get one of the Nile hookahs from H-S but theres simply no way to put an ice chiller on an Egyptian style stem without getting out the hacksaw and blowtorch. So I'm looking at possibly building the hookah with a small egyptian vase and a small MYA stem.

I've tried putting a MYA stem on a medium H-S Egyptian vase and the vase was just a bit too large for it , so I'm wondering if a small Egyptian vase might be a perfect fit.

I don't suppose anyone has a small egyptian vase and a MYA stem and grommet laying around that they might be able to test this out with for me?

Thanks and hopefully someone can help me out on this one smile.gif

Well, I was refering to the non-screw-on MYAs. My MYA uses a white rubbery grommet type connection with the vase, so I know that not all MYAs are screw-on. And like I said before, the medium H-S Egyptian vase is just a touch too large for for the MYA grommets (maybe 3/4 of a centimeter or so) so I'm thinking that a small Egyptian vase might be just the right fit.

Anyone else have have any ideas on this one?

thats a big no.

the mya is screw on...

on the egyptians you have those big difficult rubber stopper things

While this is true, the egyptians rubber things are in no way difficult lol, in fact quicker and easier than screw-ons. I have a screw-on acrylic and an egyptian non-screw-on and I can put the egyptian together much faster, you just push down and turn slightly, that's it, while the screw-on you have to worry about lining up the threads and trying not to strip them in the process, sometimes causing you to undo it and try again multiple times before you line it up correctly.

Thats assuming you have a perfect fit on your Egyptian seal.... granted my Egyptian isn't the greatest quality, pulling the thing apart is the biggest PITA ever - - the gasket definitely needs to be trimmed down or something.

Just got my Mya in today, and while I can see how cross-threading is a possibility (could probably be remedied with more threads), it should take no more than 1 or 2 tries to get it right... even then you've only wasted what, 5-10 seconds?

Is your grommet new? Mine was next to impossible for a few weeks after I got it, but it shrunk to fit easily. May have to get a new one soon if this continues as quickly as it is...

Do you try lubing your grommet with some olive oil? Also, if you're careful you can scrape or file some of the rubber from your grommet to make it fit better.

A grommet can easily be replaced if it ever rips or wears out.

Zoojohnny, I would just contact hookah-shisha and tell them what kind of mya stem yu have and ask them to send the right size grommet with the vase to make it work. They should come through on that.

Also forgot to add that if you're having trouble getting your pipe apart after use, try running the spot where the stem and base meet under some hot water for a little while, and that should make the rubber a little more pliable and allow you to rock it out a little more gently.

Just for reference, the only difference between the mya screw ons and push ons is the grommet they give you. The older ones used to be different but the new ones are all the same.

As far as fitting it into a egyptian base, yes its possible but will take some work. The mya stems are smaller than alot of the medium and large size grommets for egyptian hookahs. You could prolly use an electrical tape wrap to gap the distance and then use the normal eqyptian black grommet to get it to seal.

Goodluck with your project!
