Smoking While Sick?

Recommended Posts

What's the consensus of smoking while sick?

Should clarify a bit... don't think I have any sort of infection, just a sore throat - - spent the last few nights at my girlfriend's house. Her stupid cats love to jump on the bed at night and curl up by your face, and lucky for me I'm allergic to the damn things... as a result I've had a sore throat for the past couple days. It is getting better and I expect it to be gone completely within the next day or two. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with waiting, but I just got my Mya acrylic and Scalli mod in (thanks again Tarik & everyone at MNH!) and patience is a virtue I definitely do not possess.

Only reason I'm worried is last time I smoked (albeit, a cigar) with a bit of a sinus infection, I ended up with strep angry.gif

Ah, it's so tempting, but probably a horrible idea. I think hookah is what has caused me to fall ill four times so far this year. I've been smoking 1-3 bowls a day and my immune system is allll f-ed up.

Def do not smoke.

I've been sick for 2 weeks and the first week at least I smoked cigs everyday...

My throat is killing me and I feel like I'm going to throw up sometimes.

Not really a good sign....

(edit)

it does fix it temporarily, but a few hours later or the day after you feel like crap. Edited by Altron

Don't do it, I made the mistake of smokin' during a cold and it took forever to shake the cough. Have you tried 24 hour claritin for the allergies? It's the only way I'm functional spring/summer.

As of today I am in the same boat (sore throat). I am laying off the hookah until I feel better. Whenever I have smoked when sick in the past (cigars) I just end up being sicker longer. Plus now I have something to look forward to when I get better.

I would say it depends on whether or not you are a regular cigarette smoker. If you smoke at least 5 or more cigarettes every day than the hookah should should be no problem for you at all. In comparison with the nicotine and harsh smoke your body is used to from the cigarettes, the hookah will seem like nothing at all.

However, if you do not smoke cigarettes and smoking the hookah is the only way you take in smoke and nicotine than I would suggest avoiding the hookah until you return to better health.

My two rupees.

def not... dont even attempt smoking hookah while sick.

I've done it, and I've gotten in a worse condition while passing it along to a friend.

Also, I attempted to smoke a cigar instead of a cig today... and my throat isnt as bad as after smoking a cig but its still pretty killer right now...

Took everyone's advice and decided to forgo the smoking... figure it'll be much pleasing at 100% health

Her mom's a PA and has boxes and boxes of Allegra D so I usually take that stuff (much better than Claritin) - - only time it doesn't work is when I'm sleeping and have the damn cats crawling over me at night (big surprise there).

Can't wait until I'm better so I can light up this dang thing smile.gif

Actually... I smoked while I had a nasty cough/sore throat, and it seemed the moisture of the smoke actually loosened things up a bit.

Weird thread. I was just about to post the same exact question. I've been having a sore throat for the past week or so (and it has been getting better) but it's the first time that I've been smoking Hookah while having a cold and I've noticed that the cold has lasted much longer than it usually would. It's been over a week now when usually, it'd go away after a few days. It has been getting much better but the recovery time is slow. I think I'll lay off Hookah till' I get better.

I'm in the same boat w/ chest congestion and maybe sinus issues.

Just wait it out. The faster you get better, the more you'll enjoy the hookah later, and that is why we do it in the 1st place biggrin.gif

I agree. And god forbid you blow into the hose to get rid of stale smoke, and some nasty little bacteria gets in... Your next smoke when you're better may get you sick, again. I'm so happy. First full day of spring break tomorrow, and i get to use my new hookah. Hopefully im not sick. Last night, I woke up to be laying in a pile of puke. Happens once or twice a week, even when i do not drink ( and no, no drugs involved). Go to sleep normal, wake up at 3 am in a pile of puke. I'm reluctant to head to the doctor, cause i dont want to hear bad news. With my luck, i'll be laying on my back when i start puking...

Haha thanks... But back on topic... I don't think smoking while you're sick is a good idea. Smoke is bad for your lungs when you're healthy...

I was sick back in the beginning of the year, had a head and chest cold that just wouldn't go away, just when I thought I was out.... They pulled me back in.

After 2 weeks of going from, worse to bad and back again; I got fed up of not being able to smoke hookah, I said screw it, lit it up. 2 days later I was right as rain.

If only I had mint it probably would have been better. Smoking helped free up the flem in my lungs, I coughed it up more it seems, I'm sure a little menthol would have sped that right up. Just what the doctor ordered.

Not that I'm saying smoking during a cold is good, I understand smokers are more likely to have broncitus. I'm just saying it actually seemed to help for me.
